Chapter 1 - The shadow on the marble

The Manhattan ballroom was a cathedral of extreme wealth, its vaulted ceilings dripping with monumental crystal chandeliers that cast a warm, champagne-hued glow over the elite society gathered below. The air was thick with the scent of white roses, arranged in towering floral monuments that seemed to guard the ivory marble floor. Scarlett moved through the crowd with the effortless grace of a woman born into this opulence, her fitted ruby-red silk couture evening gown trailing like liquid fire against the pale stone. At twenty-nine, she possessed a breathtaking beauty, her flawless porcelain skin and sharp hazel eyes commanding attention, but tonight, her sleek chestnut hair pulled into an elegant low chignon framed a face tight with desperate anxiety. She was not here for the champagne or the whispered corporate gossip. She was here because of the little girl in the ivory satin princess dress. Lily, the seven-year-old daughter of billionaire Adrian, sat near the edge of the grand staircase, her delicate white orthopedic leg brace glinting under the lights. Scarlett had noticed the anomalies for weeks. The unusual weight of the brace when she helped the child into the car. The strange, localized electromagnetic interference whenever Lily sat near Adrian’s secure work terminals. The terrifyingly cold, calculating stares the child delivered when she thought no one was watching. Scarlett knelt beside the girl, her ruby gown pooling around her. She reached for the silver clasps of the brace, her fingers trembling with frantic urgency. She had to know what was hidden inside. Lily instantly collapsed onto the gleaming marble, thrashing wildly. Daddy, help me, the little girl screamed, her voice echoing with piercing, manufactured terror across the ballroom. Elegant guests froze, their champagne glasses suspended in mid-air. Shocked whispers rippled through the crowd. Adrian charged through the parting guests, his impeccable black Italian tuxedo a blur of muscular, protective fury. He did not ask questions. He delivered a single, forceful kick to Scarlett’s side, pushing her away from his daughter with brutal, defensive instinct. Scarlett tumbled backward onto the cold marble, breathless and stunned. Adrian dropped to one knee, gathering the sobbing, golden-haired angel into his broad shoulders. What did you do to my daughter, Adrian roared, his intense steel-blue eyes blazing with a hatred that shattered Scarlett’s heart. Scarlett pushed herself upright, her chest heaving. Adrian, there is something inside that brace, she pleaded, pointing a shaking finger. Adrian glanced down. In that microscopic fraction of a second, a nearly invisible seam beneath the silver clasp shifted. A tiny red light flashed once inside the brace, accompanied by a faint metallic click. Adrian, blinded by a father's protective rage, did not notice. But Lily did. As she rested her tear-streaked face against her father’s shoulder, her sobbing miraculously ceased. Her frightened blue eyes turned strangely, terrifyingly calm. Slowly, the corners of her mouth curled into a chilling, knowing smile. Looking directly at Scarlett from over her father's shoulder, the little girl mouthed a barely audible whisper. You weren't supposed to find it. The sheer, predatory malice in the child's face made Scarlett's blood run entirely cold.
