Chapter 4 - The whisper in the wires

The warning was not an empty threat. By evening, news outlets reported a tragic accident in Queens; a retired investigator had suffered a fatal fall down a flight of concrete stairs. Scarlett knew it was an execution, orchestrated with terrifying, invisible precision. She needed to warn Adrian, but he had blocked her numbers and instructed his security detail to remove her on sight. The only vulnerability in his fortress was his public schedule. Adrian was slated to deliver a keynote address at a high-security defense technology symposium the following afternoon. Scarlett used a forged press credential to infiltrate the venue, hiding amongst the throng of journalists at the back of the auditorium. Adrian stood on the brilliantly lit stage, his broad shoulders and sculpted masculine jaw projecting absolute, intimidating power. He spoke eloquently about the future of secure data transmission and unhackable corporate infrastructures. Sitting in the front row, looking like a flawless, golden-haired cherub in a navy blue velvet dress, was Lily. She clapped enthusiastically, playing the role of the devoted daughter to absolute perfection. Scarlett noticed the head of Adrian’s personal security, a stoic former operative named Vance, patrolling the perimeter. Scarlett managed to corner Vance in a secluded service corridor. She didn't plead with him; she handed him a burner phone and a small, handwritten note containing the IP addresses that had wiped her computer, begging him to run a trace on the internal estate network. Vance was skeptical, but his loyalty to Adrian demanded he investigate any potential threat. Late that night, the burner phone vibrated in Scarlett's dark apartment. It was Vance. His voice was tight, laced with a profound, uncharacteristic terror. You were right, Scarlett, Vance whispered. I ran the trace. Our internal network is bleeding massive amounts of classified defense schematics to an offshore server. But the breach isn't coming from an external hack. The data is being siphoned directly from Adrian's physical location. The access point is moving through the house. It's the child, Scarlett. The transmission signature perfectly matches the proximity of her leg brace. Before Vance could say another word, the sound of a heavy, suppressed gunshot echoed through the speaker, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor. The line remained open for five agonizing seconds before a soft, childish giggle echoed through the earpiece. The ghost in the wires had just eliminated the final line of defense.
