Chapter 9 - Ethan at 2:29 A.M.
Eleanor turned toward her husband.
Ethan did not defend himself immediately.
That was devastating.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You told me you stayed in my room.”
“I thought I did.”
“Stop.”
Eleanor’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“Did you enter the nursery?”
“Yes.”
Noah stared at his father.
Ethan sat down.
For nine years he had buried the memory because Richard told him it was irrelevant.
At 2:27 a.m., Richard found Ethan in the corridor.
He said there was a problem with Eleanor’s baby.
Told Ethan to follow him.
They entered the nursery through an emergency-access door.
Richard pointed to one bassinet.
“Take your daughter back to Eleanor.”
Ethan obeyed.
“Which baby?”
Ethan looked toward Lily.
“The baby labeled Parker.”
“Did you check the bracelet?”
“No.”
“Did you know another baby had been moved?”
“No.”
“Did you touch Sophie?”
“I don't know which child was Sophie.”
Eleanor looked shattered.
Ethan had physically carried Lily from the nursery to Eleanor.
But if the swap had already happened, he was not necessarily the person who caused it.
Catherine had seen security footage showing Ethan entering.
Richard used that footage to frighten her.
He claimed Ethan intentionally exchanged the babies to conceal an affair with Claire.
Catherine believed him.
Why?
Because Richard showed her the old college gala record proving Ethan and Claire had once met.
Another true fact used to support a false conclusion.
Catherine left the country partly because she believed Ethan dangerous enough to manipulate newborn identities.
Ethan had never known Claire’s full name from college.
He did not recognize her at the hospital.
Then investigators reconstructed the exact timeline.
2:23 — Catherine enters maternity wing.
2:24 — power failure.
2:25 — Melissa moves Baby Parker toward stairwell.
2:26 — Catherine follows.
2:27 — both return.
2:28 — Melissa exits nursery.
2:29 — unknown badge enters nursery.
2:30 — Ethan enters with Richard.
2:31 — power restored.
The babies were likely switched at 2:29.
Not by Ethan.
He arrived after.
Whose badge entered?
The electronic ID belonged to a nurse who was not working that night.
Badge reported missing two days earlier.

The security camera showed only a silhouette.
Female.
Approximately five foot six.
The person wore scrubs.
Melissa?
She had already exited elsewhere.

Camera showed her in the elevator.

Rose was documented with another patient.
Someone else used the stolen badge.
The true switcher had been hiding inside the story while everyone blamed people whose movements were documented.
Then Sophie’s DNA results arrived.
Eleanor was her biological mother.
Ethan was not her biological father.
That was expected if Lily was Ethan’s child through the fertility error—
except Eleanor stared at the report differently.
“What?”
Ethan asked.
She did not answer.
“Eleanor.”
Her face had lost color.
When Eleanor became pregnant, she and Ethan had been trying for a child for more than a year.
Doctors told them Ethan’s fertility might be impaired after his treatment.
They had almost used stored material.
Then Eleanor became pregnant naturally.
Everyone called it a miracle.
But Sophie’s DNA now proved Ethan was not the father.

“I never cheated on you.”
Ethan believed her.
