Chapter 8 - Eleanor's Sister

Catherine Vale was forty-one now.
Two years younger than Eleanor.
A neonatal social worker at the time of Lily’s birth.
She left medicine six months later.
Moved to Europe.
Had barely spoken to Eleanor since.
No one had considered her because she did not appear on the nursery staff roster.
She did not need to.
Her hospital badge opened the maternity wing.
Records showed it was used at 2:23 a.m.
One minute before the blackout.
Eleanor called her sister.
Catherine answered from Paris.
The moment Eleanor said Melissa Crane, Catherine went silent.
“Come home.”
“I can’t.”
“Did you switch my daughter?”
“No.”
“Did you tell Melissa to?”
Another silence.
Eleanor began shaking.
“Catherine.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Every person in this story seemed to use those words immediately before revealing something unforgivable.
“From what?”
“Ethan’s father.”
Ethan leaned toward the phone.
“What did my father do?”
Catherine asked whether Lily was listening.
She was not.
Noah had taken her into another room.
Only then did Catherine speak.
Nine years earlier, Catherine discovered Richard Parker’s fertility clinic had experienced a sample-labeling breach.
Ethan’s stored sample was among those affected.
Richard knew Claire Hart might be carrying Ethan’s biological child.
He planned to suppress the error.
Not switch babies.
Pay Claire.
Seal records.
Protect the clinic.
Catherine was disgusted.
She contacted Claire anonymously before delivery.
Claire demanded truth.
Then coincidence made everything worse:
Claire and Eleanor went into labor at the same hospital on the same night.
Catherine saw it as an opportunity.
“To do what?” Eleanor whispered.
“To get proof.”
Catherine asked Melissa to collect blood samples from both babies.
If DNA showed Ethan was connected to Claire’s child, Richard could no longer hide the clinic error.
Melissa agreed.
Then Richard discovered Catherine was investigating.
He arrived at the hospital.
He ordered Catherine away from the nursery.
He threatened Melissa.
Then the blackout happened.
“I didn’t cause it,” Catherine said.
“Who did?”
“I thought Richard.”
Richard believed Catherine.
Each suspected the other.
During the outage, Melissa panicked.
She carried Baby Parker into the stairwell because she feared Richard would take the child’s sample.
Catherine followed.
That was the woman Noah saw.
Not Claire.
Not Eleanor.
Catherine had borrowed Claire’s silver bracelet earlier while helping her during admission.
“Not that one,” Noah had heard.
What did it mean?
Catherine explained.
Melissa was carrying Eleanor’s baby.
Catherine wanted Claire’s baby’s blood sample.
She said:
“Not that one. The other baby.”
Noah had remembered a fragment correctly but assigned the wrong meaning.
Then how did the babies switch?
Catherine did not know.
She and Melissa returned Baby Parker to the nursery.
Catherine left.
At 2:31, the power returned.
Later, Rose claimed the bracelets had changed.
Catherine assumed Rose was mistaken.
Until months later.
“What happened then?”
“I received DNA results.”
Catherine mailed them to Eleanor.
They never arrived.
She sent copies to Richard.
He came to see her.
“What did they show?”
Catherine began crying.
“Lily was Ethan’s daughter.”
“We know that.”
“And Sophie was yours.”
Eleanor covered her mouth.
“You knew.”
“After six months.”
“And did nothing.”
“I tried to tell you.”
“Then why leave the country?”
“Because Richard showed me something.”
“What?”
“A security recording.”
Catherine looked toward Ethan.
“It showed the person who entered the nursery after Melissa and I left.”
Everyone waited.
May you like
Catherine whispered:
“It was Ethan.”
