Chapter 7 - What Rose Never Told Lily
Rose agreed to meet.
Not at the mansion.
At the police station.
She looked older than Lily had described.
Small.
Silver-haired.
Scar beside her mouth.
When Lily saw her through the glass, she smiled instinctively.
Eleanor noticed.
That hurt.
Rose had gained her daughter’s trust while Eleanor had spent weeks making Lily afraid.
But Rose’s warmth did not make her innocent.
“Melissa was your sister,” Ethan said.
“Yes.”
“You watched her switch the babies.”
Rose’s eyes filled.
“I saw part of it.”
“Why wait nine years?”
“Because I was a coward.”
Simple.
No heroic excuse.
Melissa confessed to Rose three days after the births.
She had been paid to move the babies during the blackout.
But Melissa insisted she did not know why.
She believed the Parker family wanted Ethan’s biological daughter protected from a fertility-clinic scandal.
“Who paid her?”
Rose looked at Eleanor.
“Richard arranged the money.”
“Did Melissa meet him?”
“No.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Instructions came through his office.”
Again:
through his office.
Not necessarily from him.
Rose confronted Richard.
He threatened to destroy Melissa.
Not kill her.
Expose her.
Melissa had previously diverted medication from the hospital for an addicted boyfriend.
If revealed, she could lose her license and face charges.
Richard offered a bargain.
Stay silent.
Keep the money.
Leave the hospital.
Rose refused.
She filed a complaint.
Richard had her terminated.
“Why not police?”
“I had no proof the babies were switched.”
“You had Melissa.”
“She denied everything the moment anyone else entered the room.”
Rose began crying.
“I hated her for that.”
Years passed.
Melissa developed cancer.
Before dying, she gave Rose the locker key and said:
“If the Parker girl ever starts asking who she is, give her this.”
“Which Parker girl?” Noah asked.
Rose looked at Lily.
“That was the problem.”
Melissa would not explain.
Then six months ago, Rose received an anonymous envelope.
Inside was Lily’s school photograph.
And a note:
THE WRONG GIRL IS ABOUT TO INHERIT EVERYTHING.
Ethan’s expression changed.
Inheritance.
There was the first financial motive.
Richard’s estate trust stipulated that when Lily turned ten, a significant portion transferred into an irrevocable account for Ethan and Eleanor’s biological daughter.
If Lily was not Eleanor’s biological daughter, she might not qualify.
Sophie might.
Someone could be exposing the switch because millions were about to move.
Rose began investigating.
She found Lily.
Approached her.
Wrong.
Dangerous.
But Rose believed the adults would bury the truth again.
Eleanor asked:
“Who sent the photograph?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why tell Lily instead of me?”
Rose looked at her.
“Because I watched you at a school fundraiser.”
Eleanor frowned.
“You grabbed Lily’s arm because she spilled juice.”
Silence.
“You looked exactly like Richard.”
The sentence cut.
Eleanor did not defend herself.
Rose continued:
“I thought if I came to you, you would control the problem before you understood it.”
That was exactly what Eleanor had done with the key.
The accusation had become prophecy because Eleanor made it true.
Then Rose produced Melissa’s final letter.
Most of it concerned guilt.
One paragraph changed everything:
Richard didn't order the switch.
He found out afterward.
By then it was too late.
I let everyone blame him because he was powerful enough to survive it.
The person who asked me to move the girls was a woman.
Rose had spent nine years assuming Melissa meant someone acting for Richard.
Now she was no longer sure.
Eleanor stared at the letter.
“Who?”
Rose turned the page.
Melissa had written one initial.
C.
Claire?
No.
She had been in recovery.
Someone else.
Then Noah whispered:
“Catherine.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Who is Catherine?”
Eleanor answered.
“My sister.”

And suddenly Ethan understood why Eleanor had gone completely white.
Because Catherine had worked at the hospital the night Lily was born.
