Chapter 6 - Noah's Memory
For nine years, Noah had believed the hospital stairwell was a dream.
He was ten when Lily was born.
His grandfather Richard brought him to meet his new sister late that night.
Noah became bored.
Wandered.
Then the lights failed.
He remembered emergency lamps glowing red along the corridor.
A nurse hurried through a stairwell door carrying a bundled baby.
Another woman followed.
Noah saw only her back.
Burgundy coat.
Dark hair.
She said:
“Not that one.”
Then the door closed.
The next morning Noah mentioned it.
Richard told him he had dreamed it after falling asleep in the waiting room.
Eventually Noah believed him.
Now Rose’s note proved someone else knew.
“Was the woman Mom?” Noah asked.
Eleanor looked shaken.
“I owned a burgundy coat.”
Ethan turned.
“Were you out of bed?”
“I don’t remember.”
Her medical chart showed she was sedated.
But not continuously.
At 2:18 a.m., Eleanor asked to see her baby.
At 2:22, a nurse documented that Eleanor was “agitated” and attempted to leave her room.
At 2:35, she was back in bed.
The blackout occurred between.
Eleanor could have been in the corridor.
“Why would I switch my own child?”
No one had an answer.
Then Noah remembered another detail.
The woman wore a bracelet.
Silver.
With a green stone.
Eleanor never owned one.
Claire did.
She showed it on video.
A gift from her mother.
She had worn it during delivery.
Now suspicion shifted toward Claire.
Had Claire discovered the fertility error immediately?
Had she learned Ethan was the biological father of her newborn?
Had she intentionally exchanged babies so Ethan’s child would grow up wealthy?
Then why take Eleanor’s baby herself?
Maybe leverage.
Maybe revenge.
Maybe panic.
Claire was furious.
“I had a C-section. I could barely stand.”
Her records supported her.
At 2:24, Claire was still in recovery with two nurses documented at bedside.
She could not have been the woman.
Who else had her bracelet?
Claire remembered.
It disappeared during labor.
A nurse helped remove it because her wrist swelled.
Melissa Crane.
The woman Noah saw may have been wearing Claire’s bracelet deliberately.
Another planted identity.
Someone wanted a witness to believe Claire was involved.
But Noah was ten.
Why stage evidence for a child?
Unless the woman did not know he was there.
Police searched Melissa Crane’s surviving belongings.
Her brother had kept boxes after her death.
Inside was Claire’s silver bracelet.
Proof Melissa possessed it.
Also found:
a handwritten note.
R says Parker girl must go to Hart. Hart girl goes to Parker. Bracelets too. Seven minutes maximum.
“R,” Eleanor whispered.
“Richard.”
Probably.
But police refused to assume.
The note did not say Richard.
Then another item emerged.
A photograph of Melissa standing beside Rose.
They were sisters.
Rose Whitmore was not an uninvolved whistleblower.
