Chapter 7 - Harrison’s Agreement
At twenty-five, Flynn signed a succession covenant.
He had forgotten it because Harrison later called it “obsolete.”
It wasn't.
The agreement promised that Flynn would preserve Whitmore voting control within Harrison’s direct family line.
If Flynn married someone with competing financial rights, those rights were to be contractually subordinated where lawful.
Charles Hale discovered the covenant before Mabel married Flynn.
He demanded it be revoked.
Harrison claimed it was.
But Flynn had never signed revocation.
Meaning Flynn entered marriage carrying an old obligation that potentially conflicted with Mabel’s Hale interests.
Was the covenant enforceable?
Probably not fully.
But it revealed intent.
Then Mabel asked:
“Did you know Dad objected?”
Flynn nodded.

Another premarital secret.
Flynn claimed he believed Harrison handled it.
Mabel asked:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I thought it didn't matter.”
Every disaster in this family began with that sentence.
Then Charles had created the emergency trust activation partly as defense against Harrison’s covenant.
Not to enrich Mabel.
To ensure no spouse could pressure her into surrendering Hale rights.
Mabel had thought the trust was about inheritance.
It was about independence.
Then another fact:
Evelyn did not become “the heir” when Mabel activated it.
Mabel’s delivery-room line had been emotional.
The trust did not crown babies.
It protected descendants equally regardless of sex.
Flynn’s obsession with an heir had been entirely his own.
Then Selina’s daughter would potentially qualify too?
Not under Hale trust.
But under validated Avery rights.
Different structure.
Both girls could have economic interests.
Neither would automatically control a company.
Marcus proposed permanent independent governance.
Flynn resisted.
Cassandra hated it.
Mabel considered it.
Then Phoebe said:
“Charles recommended exactly that.”
Mabel stared.
Her father never wanted her to take Whitmore.
He wanted the family to stop treating corporations like thrones.
That changed the story.
Then auditors validated Rebecca’s interest.
$21.8 million after adjustments.
Thomas Avery’s claim:
$7.3 million.
Phoebe would receive it through independent estate process.
She immediately announced most would remain invested pending review.
No celebration.
No revenge.
Then employee records revealed another issue.
Harrison had underfunded a profit-sharing pool during three expansion years.
Amount owed:
$11 million plus adjustment.
Suddenly family arguments over inheritance looked obscene.
Workers had actual contractual rights too.
Mabel supported paying them first from restructuring proceeds.
Flynn objected initially because cash impact could be severe.
Then independent analysis showed staggered payment possible.
He agreed.
Not redemption.
One correct decision.
Then Cassandra disappeared from board meeting.
Her attorney sent resignation.
Too easy.
Marcus suspected she was preparing something.
He was right.
Cassandra filed suit challenging Charles Hale’s conversion rights.
If successful, trust activation could collapse.
Her evidence:
A letter allegedly signed by Charles.
It stated he had agreed to cancel conversion provisions after Mabel married Flynn.
Mabel stared at signature.
It looked genuine.
Phoebe looked worse.
“That's your father’s signature.”
Flynn almost smiled.
Then Phoebe added:
“But he never wrote this letter.”
How could she know?
Because the letter was dated March 14.
Charles had been unconscious in ICU that entire day.
Someone had used his real signature.
Who had access?
Mabel.
Phoebe.
Charles’s assistant.
And Flynn.
Then forensic review found source.
The signature had been copied from Mabel and Flynn’s prenuptial agreement.
Someone with access to their prenup created the false letter.
Mabel looked at Flynn.
He looked genuinely stunned.
Then Phoebe said:
“There were only four people who received the executed prenup.”
Mabel.
Flynn.
Charles.
And Mabel’s former attorney.
A man named Adrian Locke.
Mabel had not heard that name in six years.
