Chapter 18 - The Girl Born Twice

Elena read the handwriting four times.

Eleanor Grace Monroe.

Her hands began to tremble.

“That isn't my name.”

Celeste was staring at her differently now.

Not like a rival.

Not even like a stranger.

Like someone seeing a ghost.

“My mother's surname was Monroe.”

“I know.”

“Then why would Margaret write Monroe under your photograph?”

Adrian moved toward the door.

Security blocked him.

Elena looked at her father.

“Tell me.”

He said nothing.

“Tell me why Margaret wrote another woman's surname as my birth name.”

Adrian's face collapsed into an expression Elena had never seen.

Shame.

“You were sick when you were born.”

The answer was so ordinary that for one second Elena thought she'd misunderstood.

“What?”

“Your mother had complications. You stopped breathing twice.”

Elena remembered her mother's version: emergency delivery, three weeks premature, Adrian refusing to leave the hospital.

It had always been one of the few loving stories about him.

Apparently even that memory belonged to someone else.

Adrian continued.

“There was another newborn in the same hospital.”

Celeste whispered, “No.”

Leonard stood very still.

Elena felt suddenly nauseous.

“What are you saying?”

“The other baby died.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Or that is what I was told.”

“Whose baby?”

He looked at Celeste.

“Laura Monroe's.”

Nobody moved.

Celeste shook her head violently.

“My mother had one child. Me.”

“That's what you were told.”

Elena stared at the hospital bracelet in her hand.

MONROE.

The date was not Celeste's birthday after all.

She had assumed it was.

But the year—

Elena looked closer.

Thirty-four years earlier.

Her birthday.

Not Celeste's.

The room seemed to tilt.

Celeste understood at the same moment.

“That bracelet is hers.”

Adrian nodded.

Elena could barely hear herself.

“Was I Laura's baby?”

“I don't know.”

“You've had thirty-four years to know.”

“I was told my daughter died.”

Elena flinched.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Your mother—my wife—had already held her. We were destroyed. Margaret disappeared for two hours.”

“When she returned?”

“She brought you.”

Elena's stomach turned.

“She brought me?”

“She said the doctors had made an identification mistake. That our child was alive.”

Leonard spoke quietly.

“There was never an identification mistake.”

Elena turned.

“You knew?”

“Not then.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Elena lunged toward him, but Celeste caught her wrist.

Leonard didn't move.

“Margaret asked me to seal the records. She said revealing the truth would destroy two families.”

“Which truth?”

“That nobody could prove which child survived.”

Silence.

Elena stared at Celeste.

If Laura had believed her newborn died…

If Margaret had removed a living child…

If that child became Elena Vale…

Then who was Celeste?

Adrian answered the unspoken question.

“Laura became pregnant again three years later.”

Celeste's eyes filled.

“My father?”

“We never knew.”

Elena looked at Margaret's instructions.

Do not tell Celeste who her father was.

Someone knew.

Margaret had known.

Leonard reached inside Vault Seven and removed a second compartment Elena hadn't noticed.

Inside was a genetic test.

Old.

Nearly twenty years old.

“Elena, Margaret had your DNA tested when you were fourteen.”

“Against whom?”

Leonard did not answer immediately.

“Against Adrian.”

Elena almost laughed.

“And?”

“Zero probability of biological paternity.”

Adrian stared at the floor.

So that was why he had grown colder as Elena entered adolescence.

Why every accomplishment irritated him.

Why he obsessed over producing a son later in life.

He'd discovered Elena wasn't biologically his.

“You knew I wasn't yours.”

“I knew genetically.”

“And you punished me for it.”

“No.”

“You tried to erase me.”

Adrian finally looked at her.

“Because Margaret left you control of everything.”

Elena stopped.

“Everything?”

Leonard nodded.

“Margaret changed the succession structure after the test.”

The company.

Properties.

Voting control.

The family foundation.

Nearly all of it had been placed into an irrevocable continuity trust.

Elena was not merely a beneficiary.

She was its trigger holder.

Adrian had only controlled the assets because Elena had never activated her rights.

His attempt to disinherit her had done exactly that.

He had removed himself.

Elena almost understood.

Almost.

Then she saw a second page attached to the genetic report.

Another comparison.

Elena Vale vs. Laura Monroe.

Probability of maternity: 0%.

Celeste gasped.

Elena couldn't speak.

If Laura wasn't her mother…

And Adrian wasn't her father…

Then Margaret had not stolen Elena from Laura.

She had brought Elena from somewhere else entirely.

Leonard sat down heavily.

“This is why Margaret buried everything.”

Elena looked at him.

“Whose child am I?”

Leonard whispered:

“We never found out.”

Then Celeste noticed one final line on the DNA report.

A familial match had been found.

Not parent.

Not sibling.

Grandparent.

The name beside it was impossible.

Margaret Vale.

Elena stared at the page.

Margaret was not her grandmother by adoption.

She was her biological grandmother.

Meaning Margaret's supposedly dead biological son had lived long enough to father a child.

Elena.

And somewhere, someone had known exactly where to find her.

May you like

At the bottom of the report was the name of the person who delivered Elena to Margaret that night.

Laura Monroe.
