Chapter 1 - I Already Have My Son

Mabel Whitmore had imagined the moment her husband entered the delivery room a hundred times.
In every version, Flynn hurried to her bedside.
He took her hand.
He told her she was safe.
Instead, when the door opened, Flynn walked in holding another woman.
Mabel was halfway through a contraction when she looked up.
For one exhausted second, relief softened her face.
Then she saw Selina.
Thirty years old. Blonde. Red dress.
Pregnant.
Very pregnant.
And Flynn’s hand was resting possessively against the curve of her stomach.
Mabel’s fingers tightened around the hospital rails.
The nurse beside her stopped adjusting the fetal monitor.
Nobody spoke.
Selina did.
Not with words.
She took Flynn’s hand, deliberately moved it higher across her belly, then looked directly at Mabel.
A tiny smile appeared.
Victory.
Flynn’s expression remained almost bored.
“I already have my son.”
Something inside Mabel went strangely quiet.
She had known Flynn was distant.
She knew their marriage had been deteriorating.
She knew he had spent more nights “working late” during the last six months.
But this?
Mabel looked at Selina’s stomach.
Then at Flynn.
“How long?”
Flynn sighed.
“This isn't the time.”
Mabel almost laughed.
She was giving birth to his child while he introduced his pregnant mistress.
Apparently timing mattered now.
“Get out.”
Flynn pointed toward the hospital bed.
“Don't make this uglier than it needs to be.”
Selina moved closer to him.
Flynn’s next sentence destroyed whatever remained.
“Your baby gets nothing.”
Mabel stared at him.
Flynn Whitmore was heir to Whitmore Development, a private real-estate company valued publicly at more than $200 million.
For years, Flynn had obsessed over producing a son.
Mabel had hated the phrase.
Producing an heir.
She had never imagined he meant it literally.
Another contraction hit.
Mabel gripped the rails.
The nurse leaned toward her.
“Focus on me.”
Mabel did.
Not Flynn.
Not Selina.
Her daughter.
Minutes later, the room filled with the first cry of a newborn girl.
The nurse wrapped her carefully and placed her against Mabel’s chest.
Everything changed.
Mabel looked down.
Tiny face.
Dark hair.
Closed fists.
Alive.
Perfect.
Flynn glanced once.
Then turned away.
Mabel looked at his back.
“Then neither do you.”
He stopped.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.
Selina’s smile disappeared.
Neither understood.
Good.
Flynn left with her.
Mabel waited until the door closed.
Then reached for her phone.
One number.
Phoebe Grant.
Her late father’s attorney.
Phoebe answered immediately.
“Mabel?”
Mabel looked at her daughter.
“Activate the trust.”
Silence.
Then:
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
Phoebe exhaled.
“All of it?”
Mabel hesitated.
Her father had made her promise never to activate the Whitmore-Hale Continuity Trust because of marital anger.
Only betrayal involving inheritance.
Flynn had just disowned his newborn daughter before she was even ten minutes old.
“Yes.”
Phoebe replied:
“Done.”
Less than thirty seconds later, Flynn shouted from the hallway.
The door burst open.
“What did you DO?!”
His phone shook in his hand.
Mabel held her daughter closer.
“You chose the wrong heir.”
Then Selina screamed from outside.
“Flynn?! Why is MY name on it?!”
Mabel froze.
That was impossible.
She had never told Phoebe about Selina.
She had not even known Selina existed until minutes ago.
Flynn noticed her expression.
His anger vanished.
“What did your father leave us?”
Mabel looked down at her phone.
A new document had appeared.
At the top:
Hale Continuity Trust — Emergency Activation.
Under Flynn’s name:
SUSPENDED.
Under Mabel’s newborn daughter:
PROTECTED BENEFICIARY.
Then Mabel saw the third name.
Selina Avery.
Not beneficiary.
Not heir.
Designated Trigger Party.

And beside it was a date.
Three years before Selina supposedly met Flynn.
