Chapter 7 - Forty-Four Minutes
Police became involved.
Not because of old medical-record discrepancy alone.
Because somebody had manipulated Eleanor, entered Cole property, planted speaker and made threatening calls.
Security review produced first major break.
Woman upstairs had been Rebecca.
But speaker was placed before Rebecca arrived.
Event caterer carried box upstairs.
He remembered champagne-dressed woman telling him nursery sound machine belonged there.
He assumed she was family.
Description sounded like Eleanor.
But Eleanor had been downstairs.
Camera caught woman's profile.
Blonde.
Similar height.
Not Eleanor.
Facial recognition wasn't needed.
Anna recognized her.
“Laura.”
Emma stared.
Her sister had been inside house.
Why?
Police traced unknown call to disposable VoIP account.
No location.
But Laura’s car was found at hotel twelve miles away.
Laura herself walked into police station next morning.
She was not kidnapped.
Not hiding from traffickers.
Not secret mastermind.
She wanted attorney.
Then she asked speak with Emma.
Sisters met through glass interview room.
Emma’s first question:
“Where is Grace?”
“With my husband.”
“You're married?”
“Three months.”
“Why did you disappear?”
“I didn't disappear. I stopped talking to family.”
“Why come into my house?”
Laura looked ashamed.
“To force Eleanor to admit what she knew.”
Emma stared.
Laura had sent photograph.
Laura had sent crying-test instructions.
Laura arranged Rebecca’s anonymous message.
Laura planted speaker.
Laura also called Ethan afterward.
She had manufactured supernatural-looking “second baby” mystery.
“Why?”
“Because nobody listened when I asked normally.”
“You told Eleanor to make Sophie cry.”
“I told her play recording of Sophie crying.”
Emma froze.
“What?”
Laura produced copy of message.
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHETHER B IS STILL IN YOUR HOUSE, PLAY SOPHIE’S CRY WHERE A CAN HEAR HER.
Eleanor had misread—or mentally transformed—“play Sophie’s cry” into “make Sophie cry.”
Laura never instructed her to harm baby.
That did not absolve Laura of reckless manipulation.
But pillow attack was Eleanor’s decision alone.
Why plant bracelet?
Laura wanted expose Twin A/B record.
Why involve Rebecca?
Because Rebecca had access to hospital history.
Why disguise herself as Eleanor?
To avoid being recognized entering nursery.
Emma asked:
“What happened during forty-four minutes?”
Laura stopped performing.
Fear appeared.
“When Grace came home, she had injection mark on heel that wasn't from newborn screening.”
Hospitals confirmed heel sticks common.
Laura knew.
This was different.
Small adhesive patch had been removed from upper thigh.
Grace was lethargic.
Laura complained.
Hospital said transfer medications documented.
But Grace received no medication according official chart.
Months later Laura requested raw audit.
Denied.
Then she learned Sophie’s identity had temporarily been attached to another infant.
She believed someone used false record to administer something to Grace without leaving it under Grace’s name.
Ethan asked what.
Laura whispered:
“I don't know.”
Then she produced item she'd kept six months.
A tiny medication vial label peeled from Grace’s blanket.
Lot number:
CR-17.
Rebecca went pale.
“What?”
She knew prefix.
It wasn't medication.
CR stood for Cord Registry.
A tissue-sample collection kit.
