Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Took Nothing

Madeline Ross had worked in the Cole mansion for eleven days after Sophie’s birth.
She was fifty-three, experienced, quiet and highly recommended.
She sterilized bottles.
Tracked Sophie’s sleep.
Helped Emma recover.
Then she resigned abruptly.
Emma remembered reason:
family emergency in Pennsylvania.
There had been no conflict.
No missing jewelry.
No suspicious behavior.
Ethan located her through nursing registry.
Madeline lived forty minutes away.
She answered door.
When Ethan showed bracelet, her knees nearly buckled.
“Where did you get that?”
“My mother hid it in a pillow.”
Madeline shook her head.
“No. Eleanor didn't hide it.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I did.”
Ethan stared.
Madeline asked him inside.
She admitted attending charity dinner earlier that afternoon as temporary event nurse.
She placed bracelet inside decorative pillow before guests arrived.
Why?
Because she knew Eleanor frequently sat in that room.
She wanted Eleanor to find it.
“Why not give it to me?”
“Because I needed to know what Eleanor remembered first.”
“About Twin A?”
Madeline's expression tightened.
“About crying.”
That word again.
She explained.
Three days after Sophie’s birth, Madeline worked overnight at St. Matthew’s neonatal observation unit.
A severe storm caused partial network outage.
Several infants were temporarily tracked with printed backup bands.
At approximately 2:10 a.m., Madeline heard baby crying in unused family observation room.
She entered.
There was one infant.
No parent.
A temporary bassinet card read:
A-4118.
Madeline notified supervisor.
Supervisor told her child was awaiting transfer from affiliated clinic.
An hour later, another nurse brought Sophie back to hospital.
Ethan frowned.
“Sophie was home.”
“Yes.”
Emma stared.
“I never brought her back.”
Madeline nodded.
“That's problem.”
Hospital record said Sophie Cole returned for respiratory observation at 3:06 a.m.
But Emma and Ethan had been home.
Home security footage later confirmed they never left.
Therefore Infant B record wasn't created because Sophie returned.
Someone used Sophie’s identity to register another baby.
Madeline saw two infants that night.
A-4118.
And child wearing bracelet printed:
SOPHIE COLE — TWIN B.
“Was that Sophie?” Ethan asked.
“No.”
Emma covered mouth.
“So another baby was using our daughter's name?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“By morning both bassinets were empty.”
“Transferred?”
“That's what I was told.”
“Where?”
Madeline shook head.
“Records were sealed.”
Then why become Sophie’s postpartum nurse?
Because three days later Madeline saw Cole family advertisement through hospital referral list.
She recognized name.
She accepted assignment hoping determine whether Sophie was one of babies she saw.
The moment she arrived at mansion she knew.
Real Sophie looked nothing like infant she had seen under Sophie’s hospital identity.
Ethan asked why she waited six months.
Madeline's eyes filled.
“Because someone called me after my first night here.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“What did they say?”
Madeline looked at Emma.
“They knew my son's address.”
Silence.
“They told me if I ever asked about A-4118 again, they would make sure my nursing license disappeared.”
Ethan clenched jaw.
May you like
Then Madeline added:
“And Eleanor was standing behind me when call came.”
