Chapter 3 - Three Days Later

Sophie was Ethan and Emma Cole’s biological daughter.
That fact was established quickly.
Ethan refused to let mystery metastasize into speculation.
An independently collected DNA test confirmed Ethan’s paternity.
Emma’s sample confirmed maternity.
There had been no baby swap.
The infant Anna protected was Sophie.
Ethan had watched her birth.
Emma had carried her.
Nobody had replaced her.
So why did a hospital system suddenly create a “Twin B” record three days after her birth?
Emma returned from charity board trip that night and nearly collapsed when Ethan showed her bracelet.
“TWIN B?”
“You've never seen this?”
“Never.”
Eleanor watched her carefully.
Emma noticed.
“You think I'm lying?”
“No.”
“You put a pillow over my baby.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I did.”
Emma crossed room and slapped her.
Nobody stopped her.
“You don't touch Sophie again.”
“I understand.”
“No, you don't. You're done.”
Eleanor accepted it.
That made Ethan even more uneasy.
His mother was controlling, proud and often cruel when challenged.
Submission was not her nature.
Something frightened her more than losing access to family.
Rebecca explained hospital mechanics.
Three days after Sophie’s birth, someone with administrative access created a supplemental neonatal record.
Not another birth certificate.
Not another legal child.
A hospital tracking record.
It listed:
INFANT A — FEMALE — TEMPORARY ID 4118.
INFANT B — SOPHIE COLE — TEMPORARY ID 4119.
Sophie’s legitimate medical chart remained intact.
Supplemental record was attached only to archived neonatal logistics database.
Emma whispered:
“What is Infant A?”
Rebecca didn't know.
She had discovered entry months later during records migration.
When she asked supervisor, record disappeared from her access.
Then anonymous complaint accused her of violating patient privacy.
She resigned before termination proceedings.
“Why didn't you call us?”
“I tried.”
Ethan had no calls.
Rebecca showed phone records.
Three calls to Cole residence.
All answered.
Each under forty seconds.
Ethan looked at Eleanor.
She went pale.
“You answered them.”
“Yes.”
“What did she tell you?”
“That there was a second neonatal record attached to Sophie.”
“And you hid it from me?”
“I thought she was trying to extort us.”
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“I asked you for nothing.”
Eleanor looked away.
Then Emma noticed something on bracelet.
A tiny handwritten mark beside barcode.
Not hospital printing.
A blue ink letter:
M.
Rebecca stared at it.
“I've seen that mark.”
“Where?”
“On another bracelet.”
“Whose?”
Rebecca looked toward Sophie.
“A baby who left St. Matthew’s the same night Sophie did.”
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
“Name?”
Rebecca answered:
“Madeline Ross.”
Emma gripped Ethan’s arm.
May you like
Because she knew that name.
Madeline Ross had been Emma’s private postpartum nurse.
