Anna had not gone to Arizona and vanished.
She reinvented herself.
Nursing degree.
Clinical administration.
Eventually Meridian Reproductive Center.
Under her married name:
Anna Lewis.
She never knew Raymond Cole’s connection to Patricia at first.
Then she discovered Claire’s file.
Her dead brother’s embryos.
She recognized the name.
She accessed records.
That was illegal.
But what she found was worse.
J-4.
Unauthorized donor substitution.
She copied evidence.
Then confronted Raymond.
He threatened her career.
She threatened exposure.
Then Raymond told her the truth about her first child.
Not dead.
Not lost by accident.
Alive.
Anna became vulnerable to the one thing she wanted most.
Information.
Raymond offered a trade.
Silence about J-4 in exchange for the location of her daughter.
Anna agreed.
Did he tell her?
Partly.
He gave her the forged Patricia placement file.
Led her to believe Patricia had taken the child.
That explained decades of hatred.
Anna thought the Whitmores stole her daughter.
She began watching them.
Claire.
Henry.
Patricia.
Later Lily.
Daniel felt a chill.
“Anna has been watching Lily?”
Patricia nodded.
For years.
Why?
Because Anna believed Lily might somehow be her daughter’s child?
No.
Because Lily was Jacob’s daughter.
Anna’s niece.
The only blood relative from her brother still alive.
Her anger and grief tangled into obsession.
Then Daniel remembered Claire becoming colder toward Lily only recently.

Claire returned to the room.
Eyes swollen.

Everyone stared.
Three months earlier, Claire received an anonymous email.
Photographs of Lily.
Copies of Jacob’s old genetic records.
Message:
YOUR DAUGHTER IS LIVING ON BORROWED TIME.
Claire panicked.
The email claimed Lily carried the same heart defect that killed Anna’s baby and possibly Jacob.
Claire secretly arranged testing.
Results?
Lily did carry a variant.
But low penetrance.
Manageable with cardiology surveillance.
Not a death sentence.
Then another email:
PATRICIA CAUSED THE FIRST CHILD’S DEATH.
Claire confronted her mother.
Patricia admitted refusing to help Anna.
Claire’s trust shattered.
Yet instead of distancing from Patricia, Claire became more dependent on her.
Why?
Patricia convinced Claire the anonymous sender was dangerous and might abduct Lily.
That was why Claire watched Lily differently.
Fear.
Not hatred.
Then why say:
“She deserved it”?
Claire covered her face.
“I was angry at Daniel.”
Not enough.
“I wanted him to stop blaming Mom.”
Still not enough.
Daniel’s voice stayed cold.
“You chose your mother over a crying six-year-old.”
Claire whispered:
“I know.”
Good.
No excuse.
Then the next twist.
The anonymous sender was not Anna.
Investigators traced the email infrastructure to Ohio.
Anna lived in Arizona.
Who was sending them?
Henry’s old private investigator had notes.
Someone else had been using Anna’s story for leverage.
Initials:
R.C.
Raymond Cole.
Still alive.
