Chapter 3 - The Grave Henry Didn’t Want Opened

They stopped Patricia before she reached the cemetery.
Not Daniel.
Police.
The groundskeeper had called after seeing a car circling the locked entrance.
Patricia claimed she was distraught.
No shovel.
No tools.
No crime.
But she had Henry’s cedar document box in her trunk.
Daniel met her at home.
Evelyn arrived with Rachel and Lily stayed safely away.
The second Patricia saw Evelyn, she became furious.
“You.”
Evelyn stared back.
“Still blaming everyone else?”
Claire stepped between them.
“What happened in 2012?”
Neither woman answered.
Daniel placed Henry’s letter on the table.
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“You found them.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“What arrangement?”
Patricia shouted:
“Don’t.”
Evelyn laughed sadly.
“You’ve had eleven years.”
Claire started crying.
“Someone tell me the truth.”
Evelyn finally sat.
In 2012, Claire had been twenty-four.
Newly married to her first husband, Jacob.
Daniel knew Jacob.
At least by reputation.
He died in 2014.
Motorcycle accident.
Claire rarely spoke about him.
She met Daniel two years later.
Married him in 2018.
Lily was born in 2020.
Evelyn continued.
Jacob had a younger sister.
Anna.
Seventeen in 2012.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
Her parents had thrown her out.
Claire wanted to help.
Patricia refused.
Family scandal.
Religious relatives.
Community reputation.
Henry secretly paid for Anna’s medical care.
What happened to the baby?
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“She didn’t keep it.”
Adoption?
Not exactly.
Anna entered a private guardianship arrangement.
With whom?
Patricia stood abruptly.
“That has nothing to do with Lily.”
Evelyn turned.
“It has everything to do with Lily.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Who took Anna’s child?”
Evelyn.
Silence.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“You?”
“I was supposed to.”
“Supposed to?”
Anna gave birth to a girl.
But hours before papers were finalized, the baby developed severe complications.
NICU.
Three weeks.
Then died.
Daniel exhaled.
Sad.
But how did that connect to Lily eight years later?
Evelyn continued.
Anna disappeared afterward.
Jacob blamed Patricia for rejecting her.
Claire blamed herself.
Henry blamed everyone.
Then Henry learned something.
The child had not died from the condition doctors initially believed.
The diagnosis was wrong.
There was a hereditary cardiac defect.
One that appeared in Jacob’s family.
Claire’s first husband’s family.
Claire froze.
“You’re saying Jacob carried it?”
Possibly.
Jacob died in a motorcycle crash.
But his autopsy showed something strange.
His heart may have stopped before impact.
Claire stared.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Henry tried.
Patricia stopped him.
Why?
Because by then Claire was emotionally fragile.
Jacob dead.
Marriage over before it really began.
Patricia believed Claire needed to move on.
Another adult deciding what truth someone could survive.
Then Daniel remembered Henry’s letter.
One day the child will exist.
Claire whispered:
“What child?”
Evelyn looked at Lily’s family photograph on the wall.
And Claire suddenly understood before Daniel did.
“No.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Claire backed away.
“No.”
Daniel’s heart began pounding.
“What?”
Claire looked at him.
Then at Evelyn.
“I used embryos from when Jacob and I were married.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Claire had told Daniel Lily was conceived using donor embryos after fertility treatment failed.
Daniel had never questioned details.
They had chosen privacy.
He had adopted Lily legally after birth.
He was her father.
But genetically?
Claire whispered:
“Lily is Jacob’s daughter.”
Patricia screamed:
“Enough!”
And there it was.
Lily wasn’t Daniel’s biological child.
She was Claire and Jacob’s.
Created from an embryo frozen before Jacob died.
Claire had never told Daniel.
But that still didn’t explain why Henry wrote about Lily by name in 2012.
Daniel looked down at the letter again.
Then noticed something.
May you like
The name “Lily” had been written in different ink.
Added later.
