Chapter 13 - The Baby Claire Didn’t Remember
Claire stared at the photograph.
“No.”
She was younger.
Maybe twenty-three.
Holding an infant.
Hospital room.
Jacob beside her.
Date:
But Claire had never given birth.
She remembered no pregnancy.
Impossible.
Then Judith? No, wrong family.
Need facts.
Henry’s 2012 letters finally explained.
Anna was not the only pregnant young woman in the family that year.
Claire was pregnant too.
Very early in her marriage to Jacob.
Ten weeks.
Then miscarriage.
At least that was what she had been told.
She had heavy bleeding.
Hospitalized.
Sedated after complications.
Doctors said pregnancy was lost.
Claire grieved.
Months later she and Jacob created embryos because doctors warned future fertility could be difficult.
But the photograph?
Claire holding a newborn?
Not hers.
Anna’s.
At the hospital after Anna gave birth, Claire held the baby once.
Before the NICU crisis.
The photo had been taken then.
Why did Lily need to “recognize Sophie”?
Because Sophie resembled the baby in Claire’s arms?
Claire stared.
Same eyes.
Same chin.
Could be coincidence.
But Sophie was supposed to be Anna’s lost daughter.
Age matched.
If Sophie herself was that baby, then everyone had been wrong about guardianship chains.
Megan’s adopted daughter Sophie may actually be Anna’s child.
Henry suspected.
Had he confirmed?
DNA?
The letters said:
Sophie may be Grace’s placement child. Do not test without legal authority. Do not turn her life into our investigation.
Correct restraint.
He needed documents first.
Then he found one.
Hospital footprint record.
Matched archived newborn prints to early guardianship file.
Strong indication.
Not final.
Then Megan disclosed Sophie’s adoption paperwork to authorities voluntarily.
Original birth certificate sealed.
Mother listed:
Anna Lewis.
There it was.
Sophie was Anna’s daughter.
The child everyone thought lost had been nearby for years.
Why was Patricia afraid Lily would recognize her?
Because Lily had seen old photographs.
Children notice resemblance adults ignore.
Lily once asked:
“Why does Sophie look like Uncle Jacob?”
Patricia nearly dropped a glass.
Now Daniel remembered.
So the “wrong child opening the right letter” was literal.
Lily could connect Sophie to Jacob through photographs.
Not because Lily had secret knowledge.
Because she paid attention.
Then Anna was told.
She did not rush to Sophie.
She sat in a lawyer’s office and cried for twenty minutes.
“Does she know me?”
“No.”
“Then don’t tell her today.”
That surprised Daniel.
Anna had been reckless, angry, manipulative.
But in that moment she understood something Patricia never had:
Truth still needed care.
Then Claire asked:
“What does this have to do with Mom saying Lily doesn’t belong?”
Patricia finally answered.
Because in Patricia’s mind, Lily represented Jacob’s family.
Anna.
Sophie.
The hospital scandal.

Every secret Patricia failed to contain.
She had started viewing Lily not as granddaughter but as a doorway through which the past kept returning.
That explained the cruelty.
Not justified it.
Then Daniel said:
“You don’t get to be near Lily.”
Patricia nodded.
No argument.
Claire looked at him.
“What about me?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You sided with her.”
Claire cried.
“I was afraid.”
“So was Lily.”
Silence.
Then Daniel finally opened Henry’s 2023 draft recovered from cloud storage.
Most of the story now matched.
But the final paragraph contained one revelation nobody expected.
I have been blaming Patricia for the forged placement too long. She is guilty of many things, but not the worst one. Raymond is guilty of many things, but not this either.
Then:
The person who moved Anna’s child through false guardianship was Jacob.
Claire stopped breathing.
Her dead first husband.
