Chapter 8 - The Reflection
The figure was Graham Ellis.
He had been at mansion.
Blackmere had lied.
A second camera captured his car entering through service gate at 11:18.
Graham claimed he came only to speak with Vanessa.
Then left before incident.
Timestamp disproved him.
At 11:40:31, he stood near hedge.
Vanessa looked at him.
Shook her head.
What did that mean?
Audio from patio microphone recovered.
Graham:
“Do it now.”
Vanessa:
“No.”
Graham:
“You said you wanted proof.”
Vanessa:
“Not like this.”
Then footsteps.
Graham moved out of frame.
Vanessa stood frozen.
Forty seconds later she pushed stroller.
So Graham pressured her.
But Vanessa still chose.
Then investigators found something critical.
Graham had loosened stroller brake earlier.
Vanessa didn't know.
She believed brake would catch against coping after she tipped stroller backward slightly.
Was that credible?
Video showed strong kick.
Experts could not determine intent from motion alone.
Vanessa claimed she wanted stroller to tip, not enter pool.
Still reckless.
Still dangerous.
But perhaps not attempted murder.
Legal process would decide.
Nathan hated ambiguity.
Claire understood.
People wanted villains clean.
Reality rarely cooperated.
Then Graham’s plan emerged.
He wanted a dramatic safety incident tied to Emma.
If Emma’s trust activation delayed, Blackmere gained time to pressure company refinancing.
Graham did not need Emma harmed.
He needed crisis.
He manipulated Vanessa’s resentment.
She transformed manipulation into action.
Then why frame Claire?
Vanessa’s idea.
She resented Claire because Rachel trusted her.
Claire had become living reminder that Rachel saw through Vanessa.
So Vanessa chose her as scapegoat.
Personal cruelty inside financial scheme.
Then Nathan asked:
“Why did Graham send Claire the timestamp?”
He didn't.
Phone traced to disposable account created through Blackmere contractor.
But not Graham.
Someone inside Blackmere was exposing him.
Who?
A compliance analyst named Dana Brooks.
She had seen Graham’s internal messages and realized potential crime.
She contacted Claire anonymously because she did not trust Cole executives.
Fair.
Dana then formally reported through counsel.
Blackmere placed Graham on suspension.
Regulators investigated.
The firm negotiated preservation orders.
No magical collapse.
Then Vanessa requested to speak with Claire.
Claire refused initially.
Later agreed with attorney present.
Vanessa looked smaller.
No emerald dress.
Plain clothes.
No performance.
“I hated Rachel.”
Claire said nothing.
“Not because she stole Nathan.”
Nathan wasn't Vanessa’s partner.
She meant influence.
“Rachel walked into this family and saw everything I had spent years pretending not to see.”
“What?”
“That Edward never considered me equal.”
There it was.
Vanessa married into power and discovered proximity was not ownership.
Rachel, younger and professionally trained, recognized unfairness.
Vanessa should have allied with her.
Instead she saw threat.
Then Emma was born.
Vanessa feared becoming irrelevant.
Graham exploited it.
Claire asked:
“Why me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Rachel trusted you.”
“That’s all?”
“No.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Emma smiled at you.”
Claire stared.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Pathetic, isn't it?”
Yes.
But human.
Emma bonded with Claire after Rachel died.
Vanessa wanted to become maternal center of household.
Emma cried around her.
Reached for Claire.
Vanessa resented a baby for choosing comfort.
Then Claire asked:
“Did you want Emma hurt?”
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
“Did you push stroller?”
“Yes.”
“Did you blame me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you try deleting footage?”
“Yes.”
No excuses now.
Then Vanessa said:
“There's something you don't know about Rachel.”
Claire stiffened.
Vanessa reached into bag.
Attorney immediately stopped her.
Document inspected.
Safe.
It was Rachel’s employment contract with Claire.
Claire frowned.
“I've seen this.”
“No.”
Vanessa pointed.
“This version.”
An amendment.
Signed by Rachel two days before accident.
If Rachel died or became incapacitated, Claire was granted temporary emergency guardianship authority over Emma if Nathan was unavailable or deemed conflicted during an immediate safety event.
Claire stared.
“I never signed this.”
Correct.
It was not effective without Claire’s acceptance.
Rachel had prepared it.
Never delivered it.
Why did Vanessa have copy?
She found it after Rachel died.
And suddenly Claire understood another reason Vanessa wanted her removed.
Rachel had considered Claire trustworthy enough to protect Emma even against the Cole family.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“There's one more signature on the original.”
“Whose?”
“Nathan’s.”
Claire looked toward door.
Nathan had told her he knew nothing about Rachel’s envelope.
Maybe true.
But apparently he knew Rachel wanted Claire involved in Emma’s protection.
Nathan entered.
Saw paper.
Stopped.
