Chapter 1 - Ask the Camera

The stroller hit the water before Claire Bennett understood what she was seeing.
One second, she was crossing the patio with a folded towel over her arm.
The next—
Splash.
A baby screamed.
“OH MY GOD—HELP!”
Vanessa Cole stood beside the illuminated swimming pool, both hands pressed dramatically against her mouth.
Claire didn't think.
She ran.
Her shoes slipped off somewhere behind her as she dove into the cold water.
The stroller had tipped sideways beneath the surface, but little Emma was strapped securely inside.
Claire reached it within seconds.
She released the harness, pulled Emma against her chest and kicked upward.
Air.
Emma cried.
Claire had never heard anything so beautiful.
She held the infant securely against her shoulder as she reached the edge.
Footsteps thundered across the patio.
“Emma!”
Nathan Cole.
Emma’s father.
He had been inside the mansion.
Claire barely managed to say his name before Vanessa pointed.
“She pushed the baby!”
Nathan stopped.
“What?”
“She pushed her!”
Claire stared at Vanessa.
“No—”
Nathan crouched immediately and took Emma.
Good.
Baby first.
Claire pushed herself onto the wet deck.
“She's lying. I saw—”
“What did you do?!”
Nathan’s fear became rage.
His hand moved before Claire could finish.
The strike knocked her sideways.
Claire slipped.
Pain exploded through the side of her head as she struck the stone border beside the landscaping.
“Claire!”
Nathan seemed to realize immediately what he had done.
Claire touched her temple.
Blood.
Not much.
Enough.
Vanessa stood behind Nathan.
For one fraction of a second, their eyes met.
Vanessa smiled.
Tiny.
Satisfied.
Then it vanished.
“You almost killed Emma!” Vanessa screamed.
Claire looked at Nathan.
He was holding Emma tightly.
His daughter was safe.
That mattered more than defending herself.
So Claire didn't beg.
She didn't scream.
She looked past Nathan.
Above the hedge.
A tiny red light blinked.
Claire pointed.
“Ask the camera.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
Claire met his eyes.
“It saw everything.”
Silence.
Nathan slowly turned.
Camera.
Hedge.
Pool.
Stroller.
Then Vanessa.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But Claire saw it.
Nathan saw it too.
“What will I see?”
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“Exactly what I told you.”
Nathan stared at her.
Claire stood carefully.
“Then you shouldn't be afraid.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
Nathan carried Emma inside and ordered the house security system opened immediately.
Vanessa followed.
Claire remained outside long enough to breathe.
Something bothered her.
Not Vanessa’s lie.
Something else.
Claire had worked at the Cole mansion for eleven months.
She knew the cameras.
That particular camera had been broken for three weeks.
Or that was what Vanessa had told everyone.
Claire went inside.
Nathan stood before the security monitor.
Vanessa beside him.
The pool camera appeared.
11:42:16 PM.
Vanessa behind the stroller.
11:42:19.
Her foot moved.
Nathan stopped breathing.
11:42:20.
The stroller went into the pool.
Claire entered frame and dove.
Nobody spoke.
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa went white.
Then the recording jumped.
Eleven seconds disappeared.
Nathan frowned.
“Why is there a gap?”
The system administrator opened the log.
Someone had attempted to delete the recording thirty-seven seconds after the incident.
The deletion failed because the system automatically backed up flagged motion footage.
Nathan stared at the username responsible.
VCOLE_ADMIN.
Vanessa Cole.
But Vanessa wasn't Nathan’s wife.
She wasn't Emma’s mother.
She was Nathan’s stepmother.
And the woman who had raised him since he was eleven years old.
Vanessa whispered:
“That's impossible.”
The administrator looked again.
“No, ma’am.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“It came from your phone.”
Vanessa slowly reached toward her purse.
Claire noticed.
“Don't.”
Vanessa froze.
Nathan opened the backup log.
There had been another deletion attempt earlier that evening.
Not pool footage.
Nursery camera.
8:17 PM.
Nathan clicked it.
ACCESS RESTRICTED.
Then another message appeared.
FILE LOCKED BY: E. COLE FAMILY TRUST.
Nathan stared at the screen.
His dead father’s name was Edward Cole.
Nathan whispered:
“Why would my father’s trust be locking footage from my daughter’s nursery?”
Vanessa said nothing.
May you like
And for the first time that night, Claire realized Emma falling into the pool might not have been the beginning.
It might have been Vanessa’s attempt to stop something that had already happened.
