Chapter 5 - The Man Calling Himself Cole

The man was not Nathan’s secret biological brother.
His name was Graham Ellis.
Thirty-four.
Corporate restructuring consultant.
He had approached Laura using the name Graham Cole.
Why?
To imply family authority.
Laura checked.
No such Cole existed.
She warned Rachel.
Rachel began investigating Graham.
He worked for an investment firm called Blackmere Capital.
Blackmere had quietly accumulated debt issued by several Cole subsidiaries.
If Cole Family Holdings entered governance crisis, Blackmere could potentially force asset sales.
Not seize everything overnight.
But pressure.
Significant pressure.
Who introduced Blackmere to Cole debt?
Vanessa.
She admitted it.
Years earlier.
Legitimate refinancing discussions.
Then relationship soured.
Graham saw opportunity.
Rachel suspected someone inside family was feeding him information.
Vanessa denied doing so recently.
Could be true.
Then Claire remembered something.
Two weeks before Rachel died, a man had visited mansion.
She saw him briefly.
Gray suit.
Black briefcase.
Rachel sent him away furious.
Nathan showed Graham’s photo.
Claire recognized him.
“That’s him.”
Nathan’s face tightened.
Was Rachel’s accident connected?
Police reopened nothing yet.
Her crash had been thoroughly investigated.
Rain.
Hydroplaning.
No mechanical tampering.
No suspicious vehicle.
Mabel-like family thriller logic demanded restraint: not every death was murder.
Rachel’s death remained a tragic accident.
But Graham had exploited it afterward.
Within forty-eight hours, Blackmere contacted Vanessa regarding governance restructuring.
Vanessa did not tell Nathan.
Why?
Because Graham promised he could restore her voting authority.
For a price.
Blackmere would finance Vanessa’s legal challenge.
In exchange, it wanted first option on three valuable Cole development sites.
Nathan stared.
“You were going to sell company assets?”
“Not sell. Option.”
“Without telling me.”
“I was protecting my position.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
Vanessa snapped:
“I built part of this company before you were old enough to spell your last name!”
There.
For the first time, Claire understood her anger.
Vanessa was not merely a greedy stepmother.
She had genuinely contributed.
Then married Edward.
Then watched everyone begin describing everything as “the Cole family business.”
Her own work disappeared into her husband’s name.
After Edward died, Nathan became public face.
Vanessa became widow.
Ceremonial.
Ignored.
That resentment was real.
It did not justify Emma.
Nothing could.
But it explained why Graham found her vulnerable.
Then Nathan asked:
“Why didn't you fight legally?”
“I did.”
“When?”
“Your father was alive.”
Edward threatened divorce.
Vanessa backed down.
“He told me if I embarrassed the family, I would leave with whatever the prenup gave me.”
Nathan looked sick.
His father had been harsher than he remembered.
Then Vanessa added:
“Rachel knew.”
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
“Your wife knew what Edward did to me.”
“And?”
“She still sided against me.”
Laura interrupted.
“No.”
Vanessa turned.
Laura held up Rachel’s correspondence.
Rachel had proposed restoring Vanessa’s economic recognition publicly while moving voting authority permanently to independent governance.
She wanted Vanessa credited.
Paid.
Protected.
But not able to control Emma’s trust interests.
Vanessa had rejected it.
Why?
Because money wasn't enough.
She wanted the vote.
Then Graham offered it.
Nathan whispered:
“You chose Blackmere.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Then Claire noticed one final email.
Rachel to Laura.
Subject:
THE CAMERA.
Rachel had installed something.
Not pool camera.
Another camera.
Hidden?
No.
Rachel hated secret surveillance.
It was visible.
Mounted above hedge after vandalism incidents.
The same camera that captured Vanessa tonight.
Rachel had specifically requested independent cloud backup.
Why?
Her email said:
Vanessa keeps asking who controls the outdoor footage. I don't know why yet.
Rachel had suspected Vanessa seven months earlier.
Then Nathan looked at timestamp.
Email sent at 6:14 PM.
The night Rachel died.
Twenty-three minutes before she left mansion.
Attached was one image from pool camera.
