Chapter 2 - The Eleven Missing Seconds

Nathan called the police.

Not his attorney.

Not Vanessa’s friends.

Not the family office.

Police.

Claire respected that.

Vanessa hated it.

“This is a family matter.”

Nathan stared at her.

“You put my daughter in a swimming pool.”

“I didn't!”

“We watched you.”

“You watched an angle.”

Claire almost laughed.

An angle.

Vanessa began constructing explanations.

She had seen the stroller rolling.

She tried stopping it.

Her foot slipped.

The camera distorted perspective.

The attempted deletion?

She panicked.

She didn't want Nathan misunderstanding.

Every explanation made the previous one worse.

Police separated them.

Claire received treatment for the cut on her head.

Emma was examined.

Safe.

That mattered most.

Then investigators asked Claire a question.

“Why were you outside at 11:42?”

“A bottle.”

She had gone to the guest kitchen for warm water.

“Why didn't you use the main kitchen?”

“Vanessa told me not to.”

“When?”

Claire stopped.

Around 11:30.

Vanessa had specifically sent her toward the rear guest kitchen.

That route passed the pool.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

Then Nathan remembered something.

Vanessa had texted him at 11:37.

Come downstairs. I need to speak with you privately.

He had been in his office.

The message drew him toward the patio.

Claire toward the pool.

Vanessa had positioned both of them.

Why?

If she wanted Emma harmed, why ensure Claire was nearby?

Claire hated the thought that followed.

Maybe Emma wasn't supposed to be harmed.

Maybe Claire was supposed to rescue her.

Then what was the purpose?

Nathan accusing Claire.

The slap.

The scene.

The camera.

Vanessa had created witnesses to Claire apparently being near a dangerous incident.

Except the camera ruined it.

Unless Vanessa believed it was disabled.

She did.

Three weeks earlier, Vanessa herself had told staff the pool camera was broken.

It wasn't.

The security company had repaired it two days later without Vanessa knowing because Nathan’s assistant approved the work.

Vanessa had acted under a false assumption.

Claire felt cold.

“This was staged.”

Nathan looked at her.

“To frame you?”

“Maybe.”

“Why?”

Claire had no answer.

She was a nanny.

She had no shares.

No inheritance.

No reason for Vanessa Cole to destroy her.

Then the nursery footage became available.

The trust lock was not sinister.

Edward Cole’s estate had paid for a separate child-safety archive after a kidnapping threat years earlier. Certain footage was automatically preserved.

They opened 8:17 PM.

Vanessa entered Emma’s nursery.

Alone.

She walked directly to Emma’s dresser.

Opened the bottom drawer.

Removed an envelope.

Claire recognized it.

Blue-gray paper.

Nathan didn't.

Vanessa held it for several seconds.

Then photographed every page.

Afterward she returned it.

Nathan turned toward Claire.

“What is that?”

Claire hesitated.

She had promised Nathan’s late wife she would never discuss it unless Emma was endangered.

Tonight qualified.

“It belongs to Emma.”

Nathan frowned.

“Emma is eight months old.”

“It was left by Rachel.”

His face changed.

Rachel Cole.

Nathan’s wife.

Emma’s mother.

Dead seven months.

A car accident six weeks after Emma’s birth.

Claire had been Rachel’s maternity nurse before becoming Emma’s nanny.

Nathan whispered:

“What did my wife leave?”

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa was staring at her with naked hatred now.

That answered one question.

Vanessa knew.

Claire said:

“Rachel called it Emma’s insurance.”

Nathan looked confused.

“Insurance against what?”

May you like

Claire answered:

“Your family.”
