Chapter 6 - Michael’s Last Instruction

Daniel opened the email.

No supernatural delivery.

No message from beyond the grave.

The metadata showed it had been stored years earlier with a dead-man delivery service.

Michael had prepared it before his death.

Someone—or some automated condition—had triggered it tonight.

The message contained one sentence:

IF REBECCA APPEARS, THE LOOP HAS CHOSEN SOMEONE NEW.

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“Chosen for what?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

The email included coordinates.

An old ranger cabin three miles north.

They went.

Jonathan drove his truck after confirming no one remained inside.

Daniel followed with Rebecca beside his car—not inside it.

She refused to enter.

For three miles she ran.

Daniel finally understood how the original video had looked so unnatural.

Rebecca did not tire.

Her breathing barely changed.

Because her body was not functioning like a living body.

Yet she interacted with water, mud, glass and fabric.

A physical echo.

Something between memory and matter.

At the cabin, Michael had hidden files.

Daniel found a tape labeled:

BLACKTHORN — NOT PARANORMAL.

He almost laughed.

After everything, his father had written that.

Michael’s recorded voice filled the cabin.

“The road is not haunted.”

Rebecca stared.

Michael explained his theory.

Blackthorn sat above an abandoned military research site from the 1950s.

Experiments involved electromagnetic recording in mineral-rich rock.

The project attempted to store sensory information in physical environments.

It failed.

Officially.

Michael believed Blackthorn’s geology occasionally replayed intense human experiences under specific conditions: moisture, electrical charge and low-frequency vibration.

Stone tape theory made technological.

Not traditional ghosts.

“Then Rebecca is a recording,” Jonathan whispered.

Rebecca heard him.

Pain crossed her face.

Michael anticipated the question.

“The echoes are not simple recordings. They adapt.”

Daniel frowned.

Adaptation implied something closer to consciousness.

Repeated exposure appeared to strengthen certain echoes.

They could respond to observers.

Learn patterns.

Even reproduce familiar voices and images pulled from a witness’s own memory.

That explained Daniel seeing Michael.

Rebecca seeing Emily.

The caller sounding like Emily.

The phenomenon used memory.

But Michael warned:

“One echo behaves differently.”

The Pursuer.

It did not replay a dead individual.

It moved between identities.

Used familiar voices.

Created figures in cars.

Manipulated drivers into making fatal decisions.

Michael believed it emerged from the research system itself—a composite built from decades of recorded fear.

Not a demon.

Not a human ghost.

A pattern.

Rebecca whispered:

“It doesn’t have a name.”

Exactly.

Daniel asked:

“Then why does Rebecca keep appearing?”

Michael’s tape answered moments later.

“Because Rebecca became its counter-pattern.”

On her wedding night, Rebecca died near the research chamber beneath Blackthorn Bridge.

Her final actions were not flight.

They were warning.

She spent her last moments trying to stop Jonathan and Michael from following the Pursuer.

That behavior became deeply imprinted.

Whenever conditions activated the phenomenon, Rebecca’s echo returned to warn drivers.

Running beside them.

Silencing them.

Redirecting them.

The terrifying bride was a guardian mistaken for a threat.

Jonathan covered his face.

For twenty-eight years he had feared her.

Michael had too.

At first.

Then Michael learned the truth.

But one mystery remained.

Why did Michael instruct Daniel not to let Rebecca reach the bridge?

The tape changed tone.

“If Rebecca reaches the chamber thirteen times, the echo may stop being an echo.”

Daniel stared.

Michael believed repeated reactivation was increasing Rebecca’s coherence.

She remembered more each cycle.

Interacted more physically.

Eventually she might cross a threshold.

Become stable.

Jonathan looked at her.

“Alive?”

Michael answered:

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca’s face filled with hope.

Dangerous hope.

Then Michael added:

“But every time Rebecca becomes stronger, so does the Pursuer.”

Two linked patterns.

Guardian and predator.

One could not strengthen without feeding the other.

Rebecca’s hope vanished.

Daniel understood Michael’s warning.

Letting Rebecca reach the bridge might restore more of her.

But also strengthen what killed her.

Jonathan whispered:

“How many times has she reached it?”

Rebecca answered:

“Twelve.”

Tonight would be thirteen.

The thirteenth bell.

The final cycle.

Daniel turned to her.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You were running toward the bridge because you want to become real.”

Rebecca’s silence condemned her.

For the first time, her actions could be interpreted selfishly.

She had warned Daniel.

Protected Jonathan.

But she also needed them.

Needed Daniel’s car.

Needed the cycle.

Needed the bridge.

“Did you lure me onto this road?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“Did you know who I was when you saw me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you would have left.”

Daniel stepped back.

There it was.

Rebecca had manipulated him too.

Not necessarily maliciously.

But deliberately.

Jonathan defended her.

“She’s been trapped for twenty-eight years.”

Daniel turned.

“That doesn’t give her the right to use me.”

Rebecca whispered:

“No.”

She did not defend herself.

That made Daniel angrier.

Then Michael’s tape continued.

“There is one more reason Daniel must never complete Rebecca’s thirteenth crossing.”

Daniel froze at hearing his own name.

Michael had anticipated specifically that Daniel might be there.

“Rebecca believes the thirteenth crossing will restore her.”

She looked at the recorder.

Michael’s voice softened.

“It won’t.”

Rebecca went still.

“The system cannot create life.”

A pause.

“It can only transfer the pattern into a living host.”

Daniel stared at Rebecca.

Jonathan whispered:

“Oh God.”

Michael continued:

“If Rebecca completes the thirteenth crossing beside my son, Rebecca will not come back.”

May you like

The tape clicked.

“She will replace Daniel.”
