Chapter 14 - The Woman Driving Sophie’s Face

Sophie was still Sophie.
That was the first fact.
Therefore whatever drove Jonathan’s truck only looked like her.
The footage did not prove possession.
Daniel refused to let appearance dictate conclusion.
They followed.
At Blackthorn, the truck sat outside the chamber.
Empty.
The Sophie-shaped figure stood on the bridge.
As Daniel approached, her face changed.
Not morphing grotesquely.
Perception shifting.
One moment Sophie.
Then Rebecca.
Then Michael.
Then an unfamiliar elderly woman.
Anna.
She looked almost ordinary.
That made her worse.
“Daniel.”
Her voice carried several tones underneath.
“You’re difficult.”
“I’ve had a long night.”
Anna smiled.
“You think skepticism protects you.”
“No.”
“What does?”
“Nothing completely.”
Anna’s smile faded.
Again, certainty was the currency these entities traded in.
Daniel refused it.
Rebecca spoke through the chamber intercom.
“Why did you bring us here?”
Anna looked toward the concrete structure.
“To finish what you started.”
RETURN had anchored Rebecca and the Pursuer.
Anna was free in the external electromagnetic network but lacked stable physical form.
She needed a host.
Sophie was ideal.
But Anna could not simply take her.
The host had to synchronize voluntarily.
Consent, of a distorted kind.
Anna therefore spent years making Sophie desperate to rescue Rebecca.
If Sophie entered the chamber believing integration would free Rebecca, she would open herself neurologically.
Anna would enter instead.
Sophie stared at the figure wearing her face.
“You made me obsessed.”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
Sophie flinched.
“You were already obsessed.”
Cruel.
True.
“I gave you information.”
“You chose what information.”
“Yes.”
There it was.
Anna’s method mirrored everything the story had explored.
Not inventing Sophie’s love.
Curating what that love encountered.
Sophie had agency.
Anna had manipulation.
Both could be true.
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Take me.”
Sophie shouted:
“Dad, no.”
Anna laughed.
“You aren’t compatible.”
Jonathan’s heroic offer meant nothing.
This was not a story where sacrifice automatically solved technical reality.
Helen arrived at the control station.
“We can purge the entire field.”
Rebecca heard.
“So I disappear.”
“Yes.”
“And Anna?”
“Probably.”
“The Pursuer?”
“Probably.”
Daniel hated that word.
Probably.
Helen refused to pretend certainty.
“I don’t know.”
That honesty mattered.
Rebecca became quiet.
“If we do nothing?”
Anna would eventually find another route into Sophie or another compatible person.
The Pursuer remained contained for now.
Rebecca remained contained.
Anna remained distributed through local systems.
The danger persisted.
Rebecca said:
“Purge it.”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
Sophie began crying.
“No.”
Rebecca’s voice strengthened.
“Sophie.”
“I brought you back this far.”
“You brought Daniel into danger.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t turn guilt into another reason to make a bad choice.”
Sophie broke.
Rebecca had learned from her own mistake.
Freedom did not justify another person’s sacrifice.
Helen prepared PURGE.
Anna stopped smiling.
The bridge lights exploded.
Phones died.
Cars shut down.
The Anna figure vanished.
Then the Pursuer began pounding from inside the chamber.
RETURN’s containment weakened.
Anna was attacking the electrical network holding it.
If Helen purged now, the field might collapse before erasure completed.
The Pursuer could escape.
They needed manual isolation switches inside the chamber.
Someone had to enter.
Rebecca was already there.
She could operate them.
But the switches required physical pressure.
Could she?
Her form had become stronger after RETURN.
Maybe.
Rebecca tried.
First switch.
It moved.
Second.
Moved.
Third.
Stuck.
Daniel entered.
Jonathan grabbed him.
“No.”
“Rebecca can’t reach it alone.”
“You could die.”
“Yes.”
No dramatic certainty.
Just fact.
Daniel entered.
Inside, the chamber filled with hallucinations immediately.
Michael appeared.
Emily.
Sophie.
A child Daniel did not know.
Then Rebecca.
The real Rebecca stood beside the third switch.
“How do you know I’m me?” she asked.
Daniel listened.
Two quick barefoot steps.
Tiny pause.
Left-foot drag.
“You still walk wrong.”
For the first time all night, Rebecca laughed.
They pulled together.
The switch moved halfway.
The Pursuer appeared behind Daniel as Michael.
“Danny.”
Daniel ignored it.
“Your father wanted you here.”
Maybe true.
“He knew Rebecca would use you.”
Partly true.
“He chose strangers over you.”
Sometimes true.
Daniel kept pulling.
The Pursuer’s strongest weapon was no longer lies.
It was unresolved truths.
Michael had endangered Daniel through his containment plan.
Loved him anyway.
Both.
Daniel could hold contradiction without collapsing into a single verdict.
The switch moved farther.
Then Rebecca screamed.
Anna appeared beside her.
Not projected.
Inside the containment field.
Rebecca stared.
“You came back.”
Anna smiled.
“I never completely left.”
Helen’s voice came through the speaker:
“Daniel, get out!”
Too late.
Anna touched Rebecca.
The entire chamber flashed white.
Daniel was thrown backward.
When his vision returned, only one woman stood near the switch.
Ivory wedding gown.
Wet brunette hair.
Porcelain skin.
She looked like Rebecca.
“Daniel?”
He froze.
Same voice.
Same face.
Same left-foot drag when she stepped forward.
But Daniel had learned the final lesson.
Behavior could be copied too.
“Rebecca?”
She nodded tearfully.
“Help me.”
He almost moved.
Then he noticed her hand.
She raised one finger toward her lips.
Left hand.
Rebecca always used her right.
Daniel stepped back.
The woman smiled.
Not Rebecca’s human smile.
The slow roadside smile.
Anna whispered:
“Good.”
The chamber door slammed shut between them.
Daniel was outside.
Anna was trapped inside.
But Rebecca was nowhere visible.
Jonathan ran to the intercom.
“Rebecca!”
Static.
Nothing.
Helen stared at the readings.
Two patterns remained inside.
One was the Pursuer.
The other—
she could not identify.
Sophie whispered:
“Anna?”
Helen shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel stared through the observation glass.
The bride stood motionless inside.
Was it Anna?
Rebecca?
A merged pattern?
Then the bride pressed her palm to the glass.
With one finger, she wrote through condensation:
PURGE ME.
Jonathan collapsed.
Daniel stared at the words.
If Rebecca was still inside, she was asking him to erase her.
If Anna was pretending to be Rebecca, she wanted him to purge for another reason.
There was no perfect evidence.
No final test.
Only a decision.
Daniel reached toward the purge control.
The bride suddenly erased the words.
Then wrote:
WAIT.
Daniel froze.
May you like
A second handprint appeared on the glass behind her.
Someone else was inside.
