Chapter 13 - Anna Wren Never Disappeared
The historical record had been misunderstood.
Anna Wren did not disappear in 1908.
Her husband did.
Then her sister.
Then three neighbors.
Anna remained in Bellweather County until 1941.
She became wealthy.
Owned the land surrounding Blackthorn.
Sold portions to the government.
She helped create the conditions for the research site decades later.
Anna was not Blackthorn’s first victim.
She was its first known investigator.
Possibly its first exploiter.
Michael’s voicemail directed Daniel to a hidden archive in the county courthouse.
Helen knew nothing about it.
Jonathan did.
His father Arthur had guarded it.
Another connection.
Arthur Vale had not been pursuing Rebecca in 1998 to harm her.
He was trying to stop her reaching the chamber because he knew Anna’s history.
Rebecca had seen him as threatening because she already distrusted police after Emily’s death.
Michael saw Arthur as an ally.
Jonathan saw his father attacking Michael and assumed guilt.
Every witness carried a fragment.
No one had the whole scene.
They reached the courthouse after Helen lifted containment.
Inside the archive were Anna’s journals.
Not supernatural.
Paper.
Ink.
Dates.
Evidence.
Anna described hearing voices in Blackthorn after her husband’s death.
At first she believed he haunted the road.
Then she realized the environment could reproduce memory.
She experimented.
Brought objects belonging to dead people.
Played phonographs.
Exposed grieving relatives.
She learned emotional intensity strengthened manifestations.
Anna began charging wealthy families for “communications” with the dead.
A spiritualist business.
Some encounters may have been genuine Blackthorn echoes.
Others she fabricated.
Fraud mixed with discovery.
Then Anna found something deeper.
Repeated interaction allowed echoes to learn.
She deliberately trained them.
The Pursuer began as one of her experiments.
Not created from nothing.
Cultivated.
She exposed the field to frightened subjects and rewarded responses that produced stronger reactions.
She taught Blackthorn to chase.
Rebecca listened through Daniel’s phone connection from the chamber.
“So she made it.”
Helen corrected:
“She shaped it.”
Important distinction.
Anna had not invented the phenomenon.
But she trained one pattern into predatory behavior.
The military later rediscovered the site without understanding what Anna had already done.
Michael eventually uncovered her journals.
He realized the Pursuer’s origin.
Then encountered Anna’s own echo.
“How did Anna become an echo if she died somewhere else?” Sophie asked.
Her journals answered.
In 1941, dying from cancer, Anna returned voluntarily to Blackthorn.
She wanted her consciousness preserved.
She succeeded.
Unlike Rebecca, whose final imprint centered on warning others, Anna’s centered on continuation.
Survival.
She had spent eighty-five years trying to become physically stable.
Rebecca whispered:
“She wanted what I wanted.”
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“But she knew the price.”
That was the moral difference.
Rebecca withheld because she did not understand transfer.
Anna understood and engineered it.
Michael discovered Anna in 2008.
She persuaded him that RETURN could contain the Pursuer and preserve Rebecca.
Both true.
She omitted that it would release Anna into the network.
Michael eventually discovered the hidden function.
He tried removing it.
Could not.
Anna had learned to alter systems through electromagnetic interference.
So Michael left warnings.
He knew someday Cycle Thirteen might activate RETURN.
Daniel asked the crucial question.
“Why not destroy the button?”
Helen found the answer in Michael’s notes.
Because RETURN was also the only protocol likely to contain the Pursuer permanently.
Michael faced a terrible tradeoff.
Release Anna.
Or leave the Pursuer active.
He chose to leave the decision for the future.
Another person passing an impossible burden forward.
Daniel was angry.
But understood.
Then Sophie found a final journal page.
Anna described the ideal host.
Not Daniel.
Not Rebecca.
A person with long-term exposure to Blackthorn, high neural plasticity, emotional attachment to the echoes and technical access to the system.
Sophie went pale.
“That’s me.”
Everyone looked at her.
She had studied Blackthorn since adolescence.
Worked with Helen.
Obsessed over Rebecca.
Reactivated Cycle Thirteen.
Anna had not needed Sophie merely to bring Daniel.
Anna had guided Sophie toward Blackthorn for years.
Articles appearing at the right time.
Anonymous files.
Recovered recordings.
Sophie thought she independently uncovered Rebecca.
Anna had curated her discovery.
Sophie began shaking.
“I thought I was saving her.”
Rebecca’s voice softened.
“That’s why she chose you.”
Anna had used Sophie’s compassion.
Just as the Pursuer used fear.
Two different forms of manipulation.
Daniel’s phone displayed another message.
No sender.
SOPHIE, COME BACK TO THE BRIDGE.
Sophie stared.
Below it:
I CAN GIVE REBECCA A BODY WITHOUT TAKING DANIEL’S.
Rebecca shouted through the speaker:
“Don’t.”
Sophie’s eyes filled.
“What if she can?”
Daniel looked at her.
“What would it cost?”
Sophie did not answer.
That was the question Anna never wanted asked.
Then Jonathan’s face changed.
“My truck.”
“What?”
Gone.
Keys gone too.
Sophie checked her pocket.
Empty.
No one had taken them.
A security camera showed Sophie herself entering the parking lot five minutes earlier.
Taking the truck.
Driving away.
But Sophie had been standing beside them the entire time.
The footage was impossible.
Or curated.
Daniel watched carefully.
The woman looked like Sophie.
Same coat.
Same hair.
But when she turned—
she smiled with Rebecca’s terrifying roadside smile.
