Chapter 12 - The First Voice Beneath Blackthorn

The new pattern called itself Anna.

That did not mean its name was Anna.

By now Daniel knew better.

A voice could identify itself.

That was evidence only of what it wanted to be called.

Helen searched historical records.

The earliest documented Blackthorn anomaly occurred in 1908.

A woman named Anna Wren disappeared near the river.

No bride.

No military research.

No electromagnetic experiments.

The phenomenon predated the technology.

The military had not created Blackthorn.

It had discovered it.

That changed everything.

Rebecca had become an adaptive echo because the environment already possessed the capacity to retain human experience.

The research merely amplified it.

Anna’s voice emerged through the chamber speaker.

“I watched them build around me.”

Rebecca could hear her directly.

Daniel could only hear what the system translated.

Anna claimed the Pursuer was not an independent creature.

It was accumulation.

Fear layered upon fear.

Every person who entered Blackthorn left something.

Panic.

Grief.

Violence.

Suspicion.

Eventually those fragments organized around one behavior:

pursuit.

It became what everyone feared was behind them.

That explained why it had no stable face.

It was not one consciousness.

It was a social wound made interactive.

Helen looked almost reverent.

Sophie looked horrified.

Daniel remained cautious.

“How do we know Anna is telling the truth?”

“We don’t,” Rebecca answered.

Good.

Even Rebecca had learned.

They tested Anna’s claims.

Historical records supported portions.

A 1908 disappearance.

Reports of voices.

Pre-military folklore about “the follower.”

But other details could not be verified.

Anna then claimed Michael discovered her in 2008.

If true, Michael had hidden another major finding from Helen.

Helen denied knowing.

Daniel searched Michael’s files.

Nothing.

Then Jonathan remembered Michael saying once:

“The bride isn’t the oldest one.”

He had assumed metaphor.

Perhaps not.

Anna claimed RETURN was her design.

Not Michael’s.

Impossible technologically.

Unless Michael had built it based on instructions received from Anna.

Rebecca asked why Anna wanted RETURN.

The answer:

“To bring him back.”

Daniel’s skin tightened.

“Who?”

Anna said:

“Michael.”

Jonathan stared.

Michael’s pattern was inside Blackthorn.

Not the projection used by the Pursuer.

An actual echo.

When Michael died in 2010, decades of exposure had left a strong environmental imprint.

Anna believed RETURN could stabilize him.

Daniel felt the old temptation.

His father.

A chance to speak to him.

Rebecca immediately warned:

“Daniel.”

“I know.”

The Pursuer used desire.

Anna might too.

They searched for evidence.

Helen discovered a hidden channel in RETURN.

It did not merely anchor Rebecca and the Pursuer.

It transferred another stored pattern outward.

Something had left the chamber when Rebecca pressed the button.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“Michael?”

“Unknown.”

A pattern had exited into the external network.

Phones.

Cars.

Electrical systems.

RETURN had contained two entities and released a third.

Maybe Anna manipulated Michael into building it.

Maybe Michael knowingly created it.

Maybe someone else did.

Sophie checked timestamps.

RETURN’s code was written in 2009.

Michael was alive.

The handwriting M.M. was his.

So Anna’s claim that he did not build it was misleading.

Perhaps she meant he did not design it.

Another semantic distinction.

Daniel asked Anna directly.

“Did you tell Michael how to build Return?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell him it would release you?”

Silence.

Rebecca whispered:

“Anna?”

No answer.

Daniel understood.

They had found another manipulator.

But was Anna malicious?

She had been trapped for more than a century.

Perhaps she wanted freedom.

Same moral problem as Rebecca.

Except Anna had concealed the cost.

Rebecca became angry.

“You used him.”

Anna replied softly:

“Like you used Daniel.”

Rebecca went silent.

The comparison was cruel.

And partly true.

That was why it landed.

Anna continued:

“You wanted freedom.”

Rebecca whispered:

“Yes.”

“So did I.”

Daniel intervened.

“Wanting freedom doesn’t justify hiding the risk from someone else.”

Anna laughed.

“You learned that tonight?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Then learn faster.”

Every phone in the room lit simultaneously.

One incoming call.

DAD.

Daniel stared.

His father’s old contact name.

His father’s old number.

Disconnected sixteen years ago.

Jonathan whispered:

“Don’t answer.”

Daniel agreed.

The phone stopped.

Then Sophie’s rang.

DAD.

Jonathan was standing beside her.

She looked at him.

He had not called.

Helen’s rang.

MICHAEL.

Rebecca’s voice came urgently through the speaker.

“Don’t answer any of them.”

All phones stopped.

Silence.

Then Daniel’s voicemail notification appeared.

One new message.

He played it on speaker.

Michael’s voice.

Not the Pursuer’s theatrical imitation.

Older.

Weaker.

Exactly as Daniel remembered him days before death.

“Danny.”

Daniel’s eyes filled despite himself.

Only Michael called him Danny.

The message continued:

“If you’re hearing this, Anna got out.”

Helen whispered:

“Oh God.”

Michael’s voice:

“Whatever she tells you, she was never trapped in Blackthorn.”

May you like

A pause.

“We were.”
