Daniel knew Malcolm had investigated Sarah.
Not because Malcolm disliked her.
Because Malcolm believed she might become legal vulnerability.
Daniel and Sarah were unmarried.
Daniel had privately acknowledged unborn child in estate planning draft.
Malcolm discovered.
If Daniel died before final documents executed, child’s existence could complicate trust governance.
Daniel confronted him:
“You do not investigate my family.”
Malcolm claimed standard due diligence.
Daniel ordered him stop.
He did not.
Private investigator photographed Sarah attending prenatal appointments.
Malcolm knew pregnancy continued.
That destroyed his claim he thought baby lost.
He intentionally lied to Richard.
Why?
Not to steal Noah’s personal inheritance.
Daniel’s voting interest was held under governed trust.
But descendant existence required independent review.
Review meant Graybridge discovery.
Malcolm’s motive was concealment.
Noah was collateral damage.
Richard found that almost worse.
A child’s entire relationship with grandfather erased because someone feared audit.
Then Maya asked:
“Where is Sarah?”
The Morgan file included current surveillance invoice.
Recent.
But Malcolm denied commissioning it.
Vendor:
Bellwether Risk Management.
Client authorization:
RICHARD STERLING.
Richard’s face hardened.
Again his name.
Again not his approval.
Bellwether had monitored Sarah intermittently for eighteen months.
Whoever ordered it knew Noah existed.
Task notes:
NO DIRECT CONTACT.
FLAG ANY APPROACH TO TRUST, BOARD OR R. STERLING.
Richard’s stomach tightened.
Someone had been making sure Sarah never approached him.
Malcolm?
He denied recent monitoring.
Financial records supported him.
He had no payments to Bellwether.
Sterling Holdings paid invoices through executive security budget.
Approval credential:
RKANE.
Michael Kane.
Richard’s chief of staff.
Richard stared.
Michael had served him twelve years.
Handled calendar.
Security.
Travel.
Personal correspondence.
Including restaurant reservations.
If anyone knew where Richard ate every Thursday, Michael did.
“Where is Michael?”
His office said London.
Passport records showed he had not left country.
Company vehicle GPS placed him in Albany.
Near the home of Helen Ward, administrator of Sterling Family Trust.
Sarah had called Helen the night she disappeared.
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
Because Helen signed Daniel’s trust transfer nine years earlier.
Certification:
NO LIVING DESCENDANT IDENTIFIED.
If Helen knew Noah existed, she was part of concealment.
If she didn’t, someone deceived her too.
Police reached Helen’s house.
Front door unlocked.
Sarah’s coat hung inside.
Daniel’s briefcase sat on dining table.
No Sarah.
No Helen.
Beside briefcase was note:
RICHARD DOESN’T KNOW WHO HAS BEEN USING HIS NAME.
