Chapter 4 - The Silver Medal
Before Claire explained further, investigators turned to the silver medal.
It mattered because Noah’s mother had treated it as proof Richard would understand.
The medal was genuine.
Sterling Foundation issued it to Daniel in 2008 after he led an emergency housing initiative following a major apartment fire.
Serial number:
SF-08-114.
Richard remembered presenting it personally.
Daniel wore it on a chain.
It was also listed among possessions recovered after Daniel’s fatal crash.
Yet Richard had never received it.
Police records showed Daniel’s belongings were released three weeks after accident.
Recipient:
Richard Sterling.
Signature appeared genuine at first glance.
But driver’s license number was wrong by two digits.
Richard had not collected anything.
Someone impersonated him.
Items released included:
wallet,
watch,
briefcase,
silver medal.
Later Malcolm personally returned Daniel’s wallet and watch to Richard.
The briefcase was supposedly missing.
The medal disappeared.
Until it reached Sarah.
How?
Former Sterling forensic accountant Olivia Grant answered.
“I sent it.”
Richard remembered firing Olivia months after Daniel died.
Malcolm told him she had mishandled confidential records.
Olivia now revealed what happened.
After Daniel’s death, she saw his leather briefcase in Malcolm’s locked office.
Beside it was silver medal.
She knew police had supposedly returned belongings to Richard.
She realized something was wrong.
She stole medal.
Couldn’t access briefcase.
Then mailed medal anonymously to Sarah with an old photograph Daniel had given her.
Why Sarah?
Daniel had instructed Olivia before death:
“If Sarah ever needs Dad to believe something, make sure she has something he can’t dismiss as paperwork.”
The medal.
Physical object tied directly to Daniel.
No copied signature.
No letterhead.
No editable PDF.
Richard looked at medal in Noah’s hands.
Daniel had anticipated forged paperwork.
He just had not known how far it would go.
“What was in the briefcase?” Richard asked.
Olivia didn’t know.
But Sarah apparently found it four days ago.
A private storage unit once used by Malcolm had been liquidated after billing dispute.
Several boxes went to auction.
Sarah saw Daniel’s initials on an online listing and bought briefcase.
Inside:
a notebook,
a bank key,
and one handwritten page.
Sarah photographed page and sent it Nathan.
Nathan opened message.
Daniel’s handwriting:
GRAYBRIDGE IS NOT THE REAL PROBLEM.
THE REAL PROBLEM IS WHO CAN PRETEND TO BE DAD.
Underneath:
IF THEY EVER USE THE CREST AGAIN, CHECK THE RING NUMBER.
Richard slowly looked at Nathan’s ring.
Every Sterling crest ring carried serial number.
Nathan’s:
S-17.
Daniel’s had been:
S-04.

And someone wearing S-04 had visited Sarah’s apartment the night she disappeared.
