Chapter 1 - The Boy at Richard’s Table

Richard Sterling had spent forty years learning how not to react in public.

Markets could collapse while he finished lunch. Executives could threaten resignation while he calmly folded his napkin. Even after his only son died, Richard had stood through the funeral without allowing anyone to see his hands shake.

Then a nine-year-old boy ran toward his sidewalk table and dropped to both knees.

“PLEASE... DON’T SEND ME AWAY!”

Richard stopped with his fork halfway to his mouth.

The boy was thin, brunette, and filthy from what looked like hours on the street. His gray shirt was torn near one shoulder. Tears cut pale lines through the dirt on his cheeks.

The waiter hurried over and reached for him.

Richard raised one hand.

“No.”

The waiter stopped.

The child flinched anyway.

Then he shoved one trembling hand beneath his shirt.

Richard watched carefully.

The boy pulled out an old photograph.

“My mother told me to find you.”

He placed it on the white tablecloth.

Richard forgot the traffic around him.

The photograph showed a dark-haired young man in a suit beside a visibly pregnant woman.

Richard knew the man.

Daniel Sterling.

His only son.

Daniel had died in a highway accident ten years earlier.

The pregnant woman was Sarah Morgan, Daniel’s girlfriend during the final year of his life.

Richard had been told Sarah lost the baby shortly after Daniel’s death.

Yet the child standing before him looked disturbingly like Daniel.

“What’s your name?”

“Noah.”

A small silver medal hung beneath the photograph.

Richard lifted it.

The Sterling crest was engraved on the back.

The same crest appeared on Richard’s wristwatch.

“Where is your mother?”

Noah’s face crumpled.

He looked toward the road instead.

Then gasped.

“THAT’S HIM!”

A black luxury car moved slowly beside the restaurant.

Richard turned.

Behind the tinted rear window sat the silhouette of a man.

The profile looked so much like Daniel that Richard’s stomach tightened.

“That man died before you were born.”

The window lowered.

A hand appeared.

On one finger was a Sterling crest ring.

Richard rose.

The passenger stepped from the car.

For one impossible second, Richard saw his dead son.

Then the man turned fully toward him.

He was younger than Daniel would have been.

But he had Daniel’s face.

Richard whispered:

“My son...?”

The stranger looked past him at Noah.

May you like

And said:

“Grandfather, get him inside. They found Sarah.”
