Chapter 8 - Lucas’s Message

Lucas appeared on screen.

No dramatic music.

Just his apartment.

“I’m recording this because Mom thinks family blood excuses lying.”

Ethan looked at Eleanor’s empty chair.

Lucas continued:

“She told me Ethan wanted me to donate but was too ashamed to ask.”

He believed her at first.

He loved Ethan.

He agreed.

Then he called Ethan’s clinic coordinator directly.

Coordinator seemed confused.

That was when Lucas realized Ethan had never requested donor.

He withdrew consent.

Too late for embryo creation.

Lucas felt trapped.

“I don’t want to be a father to Ethan’s kid. Ethan would be the father.”

Then:

“I also don’t want to be used without informed consent.”

He blamed Eleanor.

Not Emma.

Emma had been patient under pressure too.

Then Lucas said something Ethan did not expect.

“I called Emma after transfer.”

Emma stared at screen.

She had forgotten? No. She remembered but hid.

Lucas told her:

“I’m not angry you went through with it. I’m angry nobody told Ethan.”

Emma cried.

He asked her to tell within one year.

She promised.

She failed.

Then Lucas:

“If Lily is born and Ethan loves her, don’t use that as excuse to keep lying forever.”

Ethan paused.

Lily’s name.

So Lucas knew.

He had learned pregnancy was girl and intended name.

Then:

“Mom will tell herself truth would destroy Ethan. She always does that. She thinks protecting family means controlling information.”

Accurate.

Then final segment:

“And if Lily ever has my birthmark, please don’t let Mom make mythology out of it. Dad had one. Rose had one. It proves nothing.”

Ethan almost laughed from disbelief.

Lucas had predicted exact manipulation.

Then:

“Ethan, if you’re seeing this, I’m sorry I got involved. I thought I was helping. I should have called you first.”

That apology from dead brother hurt more than anger.

Ethan whispered:

“I would have answered.”

Then Lucas said:

“You don’t owe me anything. Just don’t let Mom tell a kid she belongs less because of genetics.”

Video ended.

Emma covered face.

Ethan sat beside her.

Not forgiveness yet.

But shared grief.

Then Lucas’s attorney revealed why video had remained sealed.

Lucas instructed release only if:

Ethan formally learned about donor arrangement, or

Eleanor invoked Lucas’s name in a dispute about the child.

Condition #2 had occurred.

Eleanor had done exactly what he feared.

Then Ethan confronted mother with video.

Eleanor watched silently.

At end:

“He misunderstood me.”

Ethan stared.

“No.”

“He was emotional.”

“No.”

“I wanted both of you to have family.”

“You wanted outcome. You ignored consent.”

Eleanor’s voice hardened.

“And now you’re letting a clinic error erase Lucas.”

Ethan replied:

“No. I’m refusing to use Lucas to erase Lily.”

That landed.

Then Eleanor said something revealing.

“Sophie is at least yours.”

Ethan went still.

“You’re done.”

He asked security escort her out.

No screaming.

No table.

No spectacle.

Just boundary.

Then Emma said:

“I should have stopped this years ago.”

“Yes.”

“You may never forgive me.”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s fair.”

Then Lily appeared at doorway.

“Is Grandma mad?”

Ethan picked her up.

“Grandma is going home.”

“Because of me?”

“No.”

“Because of Mom?”

“No.”

May you like

“Because of Grandma’s choices.”

Lily accepted that better than adults ever had.
