Chapter 15 - Who Lily’s Father Really Was
The answer was simpler than Eleanor’s accusation—
and more complicated than Emma’s silence.
Ethan Bennett was not Lily’s biological father.
But Ethan was Lily’s father.
Legally.
Socially.
Emotionally.
By intention.
By every year of her life.
Lily had been conceived through IVF using Emma’s egg.
During their fourth fertility cycle, Ethan’s sample was not viable enough for planned procedure.
Instead of stopping and discussing options, Eleanor secretly persuaded Ethan’s older brother Lucas to become a known-family sperm donor.

So despite what Emma believed—
Lucas was not Lily’s biological father.

Why did Eleanor say Lily had a birthmark exactly like Lucas?
Because she believed Lucas had fathered Lily.

Ethan later remembered he had a faint similar mark too.

Then one afternoon, months later, Ethan returned to formal dining room.
Lily sat in her chair.
Sophie beside her.
Emma brought lunch.
Lily looked under table.
Then up at Ethan.
“Can I eat from the table?”
He smiled.
“Always.”
She picked a piece of roast chicken.
Sophie took fruit.
No hierarchy.
No secret.
Then Lily asked:
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Did donor make me?”
“He helped make your body.”
“Did you make me?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I helped make your life.”
She thought about that.
Then smiled.
“Okay.”
That was enough.
That evening Ethan finally opened Lucas’s sealed folder.
This story was finished.
Lily’s biology was known.
Emma’s secret was known.
Eleanor’s cruelty was understood.
The birthmark meant nothing.

Ethan frowned.

Lucas standing outside an abandoned brick school with a man Ethan recognized immediately.
His late father.

DO NOT LET ELEANOR KNOW THE BASEMENT WAS OPENED.
Ethan looked toward hallway.
His father had died naturally years ago.
Lucas had died naturally too.
No hidden murder suggested.
Then one final sheet:
SITE 12 CONTAINED RECORDS FROM THE 1987 BENNETT FOUNDATION PLACEMENT PROGRAM.
Ethan had never heard of any placement program.
At bottom:
ONE CHILD WAS REGISTERED UNDER THE BENNETT NAME WITHOUT EVER LIVING WITH THE BENNETTS.
And beneath it:
ETHAN — BEFORE YOU ASK WHO THE CHILD WAS, ASK WHY DAD PAID ARBOR HOUSE TO ERASE THE ADDRESS.
The mystery of Lily was over.
