Chapter 2 - Lucas Bennett

Ethan did not ask the question in front of Lily.
That was the only good decision anyone made that afternoon.
He carried both children upstairs.
A nanny stayed with Sophie.
Emma cleaned Lily’s face, changed her clothes, and held her until she slept.
Only then did Ethan close the bedroom door.
“Now.”
Emma looked exhausted.
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth.”
Eleanor remained downstairs.
Ethan had told her not to move.
Emma sat.
“Lucas helped us.”
“With what?”
She hesitated.
“Before Lily.”
Ethan stared.
He and Emma had struggled to conceive for almost three years.
They underwent fertility treatment at Westbridge Reproductive Center.
Ethan remembered every humiliating test.
Every failed cycle.
Every appointment.
Then suddenly—
Emma became pregnant.
They had been told conception followed a final intrauterine insemination using Ethan’s sample.
At least Ethan had.
Emma said:
“There was a problem that day.”
“What problem?”
“Your sample wasn’t viable enough.”
His jaw tightened.
“No one told me that.”
“I know.”
“Then what happened?”
Emma looked toward floor.
“Dr. Mercer said they had a backup.”
“What backup?”
Silence.
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“What backup, Emma?”
She looked at him.
“Lucas.”
The room seemed to disappear.
“My brother?”
Emma began crying.
“I didn’t agree at first.”
“At first?”
“Ethan—”
“You used my brother’s sperm?”
“No.”
Emma stood.
“I did not ask him. I did not arrange it.”
“Then who did?”
She looked toward downstairs.
Eleanor.
Ethan understood before Emma said it.
His mother had arranged Lucas as emergency donor.
Why?
Eleanor feared Ethan would refuse donor conception entirely.
She believed he wanted biological continuity within family.
So she contacted Lucas.
Lucas agreed.
Secretly.
Clinic records were changed.
Ethan was told his own sample had worked.
Emma knew?
Not immediately.
She said Dr. Mercer told her after procedure had already begun.
She was sedated for egg retrieval? But this was IUI. Better procedure could be IVF. Let's correct within story: it had been IVF embryo creation cycle.
The embryo implanted was created with Emma’s egg and donor sperm from Lucas.
Emma learned before transfer.
“Why did you let them transfer?”
She cried.
“Because I had already been through four cycles. Because your mother said you would never forgive me if I stopped. Because Lucas had signed everything. Because I was scared.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“For six years.”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s face emptied.
Then he asked:
“Is Lily Lucas’s biological child?”
Emma whispered:
“Yes.”
A floorboard creaked outside.
Ethan opened door.
Eleanor stood there.
Not ashamed.
“You would have never agreed.”
Ethan stared at her.
“So you decided for me.”
“I saved your family.”
“No.”
May you like
He stepped toward her.
“You rewrote it.”
