Chapter 5 - Eleanor’s Cruelty

Before DNA results came, Ethan dealt with what had happened at dining table.

No mystery justified it.

Eleanor had deliberately humiliated Lily.

Why?

She admitted.

“I was angry at Emma.”

“So you punished a five-year-old?”

“I wanted Emma to tell you.”

“By starving Lily?”

“I gave her food.”

“From the floor.”

Eleanor looked away.

She had framed cruelty as lesson:

“You should stop pretending she belongs equally.”

That sentence ended Ethan’s patience.

“Get out.”

“This is my son’s house.”

“My house.”

“Ethan—”

“You do not come near Lily or Sophie without supervision.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“You’re choosing Emma’s lie over your family.”

Ethan answered:

“Lily is my family.”

That was the line Eleanor never understood.

Then Sophie became another source of pain.

Sophie, three, had been conceived naturally two years after Lily.

DNA not in doubt.

Eleanor treated Sophie normally because she believed Sophie genetically Ethan’s.

Lily received coldness because Eleanor saw her as Lucas’s biological child and therefore somehow “not Ethan’s.”

But Lucas was Ethan’s brother.

The logic was contradictory.

What Eleanor actually cared about was control.

She had orchestrated donor plan.

When secret became burden, Lily herself became reminder.

Then Emma admitted Eleanor had made remarks for years.

“She looks like Lucas.”

“She has his hands.”

“She isn’t technically Ethan’s.”

Emma always shut her down privately.

Never told Ethan.

Why?

Because exposing Eleanor meant exposing everything.

So Emma chose secrecy.

Lily absorbed consequences.

That realization devastated her.

Then Lily asked why Grandma was gone.

Emma told age-appropriate truth.

“Grandma said something hurtful and treated you unfairly. Dad and I are making sure it doesn’t happen again.”

“Because I’m not Dad’s?”

Emma’s face broke.

Ethan crouched immediately.

“You are my daughter.”

“But Grandma said—”

“Grandma was wrong to say that.”

“Is she lying?”

Ethan paused.

He would not copy adults.

“There are grown-up things about how you were born that Mom and I are figuring out.”

Lily looked frightened.

“Are you still Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Then DNA laboratory called.

Results ready.

Ethan and Emma went together.

The genetic counselor placed paper down.

Probability Ethan Bennett is Lily’s biological father:

0%.

Emma closed eyes.

Expected.

Then second comparison:

Lucas Bennett reference profile vs Lily.

Reference profile came from stored forensic genetic sample from Lucas’s military physical.

Probability Lucas is biological father:

0%.

Eleanor stood up.

“That’s impossible.”

The room went silent.

Emma looked at Ethan.
