Chapter 9 - The House Victor Never Built

Before the mansion.

Before Daniel.

Before Arthur destroyed their future.

Victor and Rebecca had planned a tiny house near Lake Marrow.

They never built it.

Victor assumed the land had been sold.

Arthur secretly purchased it through a shell company.

Rebecca later discovered that.

She hid Arthur’s black ledger there.

Not because she worked with him.

Because she stole it.

That changed Rebecca again.

For decades Victor believed she accepted money and vanished.

Then evidence suggested Arthur coerced her.

Now they learned Rebecca did more than flee.

She stole the record capable of destroying him.

Why never release it?

Because Arthur had documented victims alongside perpetrators.

Publishing it carelessly could destroy innocent lives.

The same recurring moral trap.

Evidence itself could harm.

Rebecca spent years separating the names.

Sarah eventually found her and helped.

That was why Sarah’s disappearance connected to Rebecca.

Not because Sarah was victim alone.

She had joined the investigation.

Victor, Daniel, Lily, Emma, Marcus and Eleanor Price drove to Lake Marrow.

Helen remained with police.

Nathan still held Sarah elsewhere.

Victor did not give him the location.

Yet.

The abandoned property contained only a stone foundation.

Victor remembered exactly where the kitchen would have been.

He dug beneath it.

Metal box.

Inside:

Arthur’s ledger.

And a photograph.

Victor and Rebecca at twenty-nine.

Happy.

On the back:

YOU BELIEVED HIM TOO EASILY.

Victor closed his eyes.

That hurt because it was true.

Arthur told him Rebecca took money.

Victor saw payments.

Saw her disappearance.

Saw the empty apartment.

He concluded betrayal.

He never searched deeply enough.

Because anger was easier than uncertainty.

Daniel watched him.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have asked more questions.”

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

The ledger was enormous.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Medical records.

Judges.

Politicians.

Executives.

Not all criminals.

Some victims.

Some witnesses.

Some children.

Marcus found Nathan.

ARTHUR HALE — NATHAN PROGRAM.

Nathan was deliberately conceived.

Arthur arranged the pregnancy with Nathan’s mother while pretending Thomas was responsible.

Nathan was not simply an accidental hidden son.

He was designed as a backup heir.

That explained Arthur’s later use of Nathan’s genetic sample.

Nathan had spent his life unknowingly fulfilling a role created before birth.

Victor understood his rage.

Still did not excuse kidnapping Sarah.

Then Daniel found Lily’s entry.

LILY HALE.

Date before her conception.

Everyone froze.

Arthur died before Lily was born.

Yet her name appeared.

How?

The ledger entry read:

LILY — FEMALE HEIR PROTOCOL.

Not a specific child.

A planned designation.

Arthur had decided years earlier that the first suitable female Hale descendant would receive the trust at six.

Why female?

Another note:

SUCCESSION THROUGH MATERNAL CONTROL IS MORE STABLE.

Victor felt sick.

Arthur had planned to use the child’s mother as controllable guardian.

Sarah became target not because she uncovered the scheme.

She was always part of it once pregnant.

Who was supposed to control Sarah?

The ledger listed:

E.P.

Eleanor Price?

Everyone looked at her.

Eleanor went pale.

“No.”

Initials.

Not proof.

Then another page:

E.P. recruited 2009.

Eleanor Price would have been twenty-five.

Possible.

She shook her head.

“I never met Arthur.”

Victor searched.

Photograph attached.

A young brunette.

Eleanor.

Same face.

Eleanor stared.

“That isn’t me.”

It looked exactly like her.

Then she noticed the date.

She was living in France.

Passport records could prove it.

Another woman resembling her?

Victor turned the photograph over.

ELEANOR PRICE.

Not coincidence.

Someone had been using Eleanor’s identity for seventeen years.

The glamorous woman who hurt Lily may herself have been selected because her name and appearance matched an existing operative.

Who?

Emma looked at the photograph.

“I know her.”

Victor crouched.

“Who?”

“Grandma’s friend.”

“Name?”

Emma whispered:

“Sarah.”

Daniel stared.

His wife?

Emma shook her head.

“Not Lily’s mommy.”

Another Sarah.

Another recycled identity.

Arthur’s system did not merely hide people.

It reused names.

Confused records.

Made true evidence point toward the wrong person.

Then Victor’s phone rang.

Nathan.

“Time’s up.”

Sarah appeared behind him.

Nathan held the phone toward her.

She looked frightened but alert.

Nathan said:

“Bring me the ledger.”

Victor answered:

“I found something better.”

“What?”

“The truth about you.”

Nathan’s expression tightened.

Victor read the entry describing him as a designed backup heir.

For the first time, Nathan’s confidence broke.

“No.”

“Arthur planned you.”

“No.”

“He used you before you were born.”

Nathan’s eyes filled with rage.

“He used all of us.”

Victor answered:

“Yes.”

Nathan stared.

Then Sarah suddenly shouted:

“VICTOR, DON’T GIVE HIM THE LEDGER!”

Nathan turned.

Sarah kicked a chair into the camera.

The feed collapsed into chaos.

A gunshot-like bang sounded—

then black.

May you like

Daniel screamed:

“SARAH!”
