Chapter 6 - Sarah’s Plan
Sarah had planned to expose the Hale family.
Not destroy it.
She discovered Arthur’s crimes eighteen months earlier.
Hidden trusts.
Rebecca.
Eleanor Shaw.
Payments to judges.
Private investigators.
Women silenced with settlements.
Children whose identities were altered to protect the family name.
Victor had inherited a fortune built partly on concealed damage.
He genuinely did not know the full extent.
But Sarah did not initially believe that.
She assumed Victor had inherited Arthur’s secrets along with his money.
So she investigated him.
Secretly.
Daniel discovered her.
Instead of stopping her, he joined.
Husband and wife spent months collecting evidence.
Why hide it from Victor?
Because they did not know whether he was innocent.
That explained Daniel’s surveillance cameras.
Not watching Sarah.
Watching anyone who entered the mansion while they searched.
Eleanor Price became involved accidentally.
She was Sarah’s event planner and longtime friend.
Sarah asked her to stay near Lily while Daniel and Sarah worked.
Eleanor misread their secrecy as marital collapse.
Then grew resentful when Lily repeatedly interfered with her searches.
Her cruelty was hers.
Not part of the conspiracy.
She had hurt Lily because she was frustrated, arrogant and convinced the child was hiding evidence.
No later twist erased that.
Victor asked Sarah where she was.
“Safe for now.”
“Why did you drug yourself?”
Silence.
Lily looked up.
Sarah answered:
“I didn’t.”
The sedatives in her bedroom had been prescribed after severe insomnia.
Someone had been adding extra doses to her drinks.
Sarah realized three days earlier.
Pretended to become increasingly weak.
Wanted the person poisoning her to believe it worked.
Then staged her disappearance with Daniel.
But someone intercepted Daniel.
And someone used Sarah’s blood to frame Eleanor Shaw’s disappearance.
The plan fractured.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
Victor’s frustration sharpened.
Sarah continued:
“Daniel thought Helen was involved.”
Helen shouted:
“I’m not!”
Sarah:
“I know.”
Helen froze.
Sarah had deliberately leaked false information to Helen.
None reached the unknown adversary.
Helen was eliminated as the leak.
Another suspicious character partially cleared.
But Helen had still abused her legal position by slipping documents into Eleanor’s signing packet.
Why?
Daniel asked her to prepare emergency guardianship in case both parents vanished.
Helen concealed the paperwork because Daniel insisted Eleanor not know yet.
Unethical.
Not mastermind behavior.
Again, different guilt.
Victor asked:
“Why Eleanor?”
Sarah answered:
“Because Daniel believed you were dangerous.”
That hurt.
His son had considered giving Lily to Eleanor rather than him.
Why?
Sarah discovered evidence Victor knew about Rebecca’s payments decades earlier.
A letter with Victor’s signature.
APPROVED — CONTINUE PAYMENTS.
Victor stared.
“I never signed that.”
Sarah said:
“We know now.”
The signature was real.
Victor had signed stacks of trust documents after Arthur suffered a stroke.
Rebecca’s payment authorization was buried among them.
Victor unknowingly approved the continuation.
Daniel saw the signature and believed his father had helped silence Rebecca.
Real signature.
Wrong interpretation.
By the time Daniel discovered context, their operation was already moving.
Victor’s voice became quiet.
“You could have asked me.”
Sarah cried.
“I know.”
Every generation thought investigation was safer than conversation.
Then Sarah said:
“There’s something worse.”
“What?”
“The person changing our plan knows everything we know.”
“Meaning?”
“They’re inside the family.”
Victor looked around.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Lily.
Rebecca’s line.
Eleanor Shaw.
Emma.
Victor.
Potentially another Hale relative.
Then Sarah said:
“Check Lily’s teddy.”
Victor frowned.
They had already found the memory card.
“No. Inside the stuffing.”
Marcus opened a seam carefully.
A small GPS tracker fell out.
Not Sarah’s.
Not Daniel’s.
Someone had been tracking Lily.
Then another object.
A folded photograph.
Victor opened it.
Lily as a newborn.
Sarah asleep in the hospital bed.
Daniel holding the baby.
And behind the glass door—
a man watching.
Victor recognized him.
His nephew.
Nathan Hale.
Daniel’s cousin.
Nathan died five years ago.
Or everyone believed he had.
