Chapter 12 - What Daniel Forgot

Rebecca did not drug Daniel.

The vial contained a medication prescribed to him.

Daniel had suffered episodes of dissociation after discovering Lily’s DNA results.

He hid them.

From Sarah.

From Victor.

From everyone.

Not because he planned something sinister.

Because he feared losing custody if anyone believed he was unstable.

During one episode, he contacted Rebecca.

She helped him.

The missing day was not chemically erased.

Daniel’s mind had fragmented under extreme stress.

A doctor confirmed the possibility from his records.

No speculative diagnosis was treated as certainty; the documented episodes and medication history mattered.

Rebecca recorded their conversation because Daniel asked her to.

He feared he would forget.

The full video changed everything.

Daniel:

“If Nathan is Lily’s biological father, he’ll come for her.”

Rebecca:

“He doesn’t want Lily.”

Daniel:

“He’ll want the trust.”

Rebecca:

“Then remove the money.”

Daniel looked at her.

“How?”

“Expose the ledger.”

That was where the birthday plan began.

Not Eleanor Shaw.

Daniel.

He wanted Lily and Emma together because both children were beneficiaries of Arthur-linked trusts.

If the family publicly acknowledged both girls, hidden succession mechanisms would activate.

That would force Arthur’s sealed financial structures into legal review.

Daniel ordered the joint cake.

Invited Emma.

Then later forgot the plan.

Rebecca told Eleanor Shaw.

Eleanor expanded it without Daniel’s consent.

Nathan entered.

Sarah staged her disappearance.

Helen prepared guardianship.

Eleanor Price searched Lily’s belongings.

Independent plans collided.

The birthday became chaos because too many adults believed they were secretly controlling it.

Victor almost laughed at the absurdity.

There was no chess master.

There was a table full of people moving pieces without telling one another.

But one question remained.

Who put Sarah’s blood in Eleanor Shaw’s car?

Rebecca answered.

Sarah.

Everyone stared at Lily’s mother.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped away.

“You framed Eleanor?”

“I needed police to find her.”

“By making them think she was hurt?”

“I thought they’d trace the car.”

“You made us think she might be dead.”

Sarah cried.

“I know.”

She had cut her palm, placed blood in Eleanor’s car and abandoned it.

She believed police attention would force Eleanor out of hiding.

She never anticipated Daniel finding the car first.

Another “good” manipulation causing emotional damage.

Victor was exhausted by everyone’s righteousness.

“You all thought you were the exception.”

Silence.

“Arthur manipulated people for control.”

He looked at Eleanor Shaw.

“You manipulated them for exposure.”

Sarah.

“You manipulated them for investigation.”

Daniel.

“You manipulated them because you were afraid.”

Rebecca.

“You disappeared to protect people.”

Then himself.

“And I spent half my life believing silence was dignity.”

No one escaped.

Not equally guilty.

But everyone had contributed.

Lily sat beside Emma.

The two girls were drawing.

Victor looked at them.

“Do either of you know why there were two names on the cake?”

Lily shrugged.

“Because we have the same birthday.”

Victor froze.

“What?”

Emma looked up.

“My birthday is today too.”

That was impossible.

Emma was seven.

Lily six.

Same calendar day could be coincidence.

But Arthur’s succession trusts activated on birthdays.

Two girls.

Same date.

Different years.

Both connected to hidden Hale bloodlines.

Victor checked Emma’s birth records.

Birth certificate issued three months late.

Actual birth date uncertain.

Rebecca had told Emma September 16.

Why?

Because Arthur selected the date.

Not biological.

Administrative.

Arthur had aligned trust activation dates.

The birthday itself was part of his system.

Then Marcus brought final DNA results.

Lily was biologically Nathan’s daughter.

Confirmed.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Sarah held his hand.

He did not pull away.

Then Emma’s DNA result arrived.

Her mother Eleanor Shaw was confirmed.

Father—

Daniel Hale.

No one spoke.

Daniel stared at the page.

“I’ve never been with Eleanor.”

Eleanor Shaw looked equally horrified.

Sarah read the report.

Then understood.

The fertility clinic.

Arthur’s stored samples.

Daniel’s genetic material had been used without consent.

Eleanor had undergone fertility treatment seven years earlier.

She believed an anonymous donor was used.

It was Daniel.

Arthur had engineered another child.

Emma was biologically Daniel’s daughter.

Lily was biologically Nathan’s.

The cousins had unknowingly fathered each other’s family branches through medical manipulation.

Daniel looked at Emma.

A child he had met only hours ago.

His biological daughter.

Emma stared back.

“Are you my dad?”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Biologically, it looks like I am.”

“Do I have to call you Dad?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Certain.

“You call me whatever makes you comfortable.”

Emma nodded.

“Daniel.”

He laughed through tears.

“Daniel works.”

Then Victor realized the final cruelty.

Arthur had designed Lily and Emma as paired heirs.

One through Nathan.

One through Daniel.

The birthday was not merely a trust trigger.

The girls together controlled something neither could access alone.

Arthur’s final inheritance.

May you like

And according to the ledger—

it was not money.
