Chapter 4 - The Daughter Victor Never Met

Victor had a daughter.

Her name was Eleanor Shaw.

Thirty-three.

Not Eleanor Price.

That distinction mattered.

The glamorous woman in the ivory gown had no blood relationship to Victor.

The names were coincidence—or something deliberately exploited.

Rebecca’s daughter had grown up under another surname.

Victor never knew.

Arthur Hale paid Rebecca to disappear.

That part was true.

But Rebecca had accepted because Arthur threatened to destroy Victor’s future and take the baby if she refused.

Rebecca believed leaving protected them both.

Another parent choosing secrecy for someone else.

Victor understood the impulse.

He also understood the damage.

Rebecca’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel found Eleanor eight months ago.”

“How?”

“Sarah.”

Sarah had discovered Arthur’s trust.

Followed the payments.

Located Rebecca.

Then located Eleanor.

Daniel learned he had a half-sister.

At first, he wanted to bring her into the family.

Then DNA results revealed something unexpected.

Eleanor Shaw was not Victor’s daughter.

Victor stared.

Rebecca cried.

“I thought she was.”

Thirty-four years of another false assumption.

Rebecca had been assaulted shortly before dating Victor.

She never told him.

When she became pregnant, she desperately wanted the child to be his.

She convinced herself it was.

Arthur learned the possibility of another biological father and used it as leverage to drive her away.

Victor’s anger shifted.

Not toward Rebecca.

Toward the dead man who had weaponized uncertainty.

Then why did Daniel care about Eleanor Shaw?

Because the biological father appeared to be someone significant.

Arthur Hale.

Victor’s own father.

The room went silent.

Rebecca’s daughter was Victor’s half-sister.

Arthur had assaulted Rebecca.

Then paid her to disappear to conceal it.

The money was not evidence Rebecca betrayed Victor.

It was evidence Arthur silenced her.

Victor closed his eyes.

His father had been dead twelve years.

Still capable of destroying rooms.

Sarah uncovered everything.

Daniel wanted to expose it.

Rebecca refused.

She feared scandal would destroy Emma’s mother.

Who was Emma’s mother?

Eleanor Shaw.

Victor’s half-sister.

Emma was Arthur Hale’s granddaughter.

And therefore—

Victor’s niece.

Lily’s distant cousin.

Not a stranger.

Family.

Victor looked at Emma differently.

Not ownership.

Recognition.

Another child harmed by adult secrets.

But where was Eleanor Shaw now?

Rebecca’s answer:

“She disappeared after meeting Daniel.”

Again.

Women disappearing around Daniel.

Suspicion returned to him.

Sarah missing.

Eleanor Shaw missing.

Rebecca hiding.

Emma hidden in walls.

Daniel absent.

Then Victor’s phone rang.

Daniel.

Victor answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

His son sounded breathless.

“Dad, listen carefully.”

“Where is Sarah?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Eleanor Shaw?”

Silence.

Victor’s voice hardened.

“Daniel.”

“I found her car.”

“Where?”

“Airport parking garage.”

“Blood?”

“Yes.”

Victor closed his eyes.

History repeating.

Rebecca’s car.

Now Eleanor’s.

Daniel continued:

“But it isn’t hers.”

“What?”

“The blood.”

“Whose?”

Daniel breathed.

“Sarah’s.”

Victor’s grip tightened.

Then a crash sounded through the phone.

Daniel cursed.

“Dad—someone found me.”

“Who?”

The call distorted.

Before disconnecting, Daniel shouted:

“GET LILY OUT OF THE HOUSE!”

Victor turned toward the girls.

May you like

Too late.

The ballroom lights went out.
