Chapter 14 - The company falls open

Arthur Vance was eventually charged in connection with financial crimes investigators believed they could prove.

Additional matters related to Thomas’s death and historical conduct remained under investigation.

Brandon faced his own legal exposure.

Beatrice cooperated and still faced consequences for acts she had personally participated in.

Julian faced domestic violence charges based on evidence and witness testimony surrounding the baby shower, along with scrutiny over his role in the financial scheme.

Chloe cooperated.

She was no innocent victim.

But neither was she the “real heir” everyone believed.

She had been hired to perform a pregnancy.

That humiliation became hers to live with publicly.

I did not celebrate.

At thirty-four weeks, my daughter decided she was finished waiting.

Labor started just after midnight.

Not from another attack.

Not from dramatic sabotage.

Bodies have their own schedules.

Fourteen hours later, she arrived.

Small.

Furious.

Healthy.

I named her Hope.

Not because I wanted sentimentality.

Because after everything the Vances tried to turn her into—

an heir.

a voting percentage.

a trust beneficiary.

a legal trigger—

I wanted her first identity to be something no corporation could calculate.

Hope Bennett Vance.

I kept my surname inside hers too.

Julian was not present.

Court restrictions and my medical choices kept the delivery quiet.

Samuel Reed visited later.

Thomas’s other son.

He brought flowers from his daughters.

No grand family reunion.

No instant bond.

Just:

“I thought she should know there are relatives who don’t want anything from her.”

That touched me.

Then Harris arrived.

He placed no federal file on my hospital tray.

Thank God.

He simply stood at the door.

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

Then:

“We identified the anonymous whistleblower.”

I looked up.

The person who had started the federal investigation before me.

The one who knew T-17.

Thomas’s key.

Arthur’s historic records.

“Who?”

Harris hesitated.

“Beatrice.”

I stared.

No.

“She reported her own husband?”

“Anonymously. Eighteen months ago.”

Before I began collecting evidence.

Before Chloe.

Before the baby shower.

Beatrice had been trying to dismantle Arthur from the inside while still behaving monstrously toward me.

Contradiction incarnate.

Why?

Harris explained.

Thomas’s old letters resurfaced.

She finally understood Arthur had never destroyed all the evidence.

She became afraid Brandon would revive the network.

So she contacted authorities.

Then lost courage.

Then helped Arthur again.

Then reported again.

Victim.

Accomplice.

Whistleblower.

Abuser.

All in one person.

Human beings are rarely convenient.

Then Harris added:

“But Beatrice wasn’t our first source.”

I stared.

“You said she was the anonymous whistleblower.”

“The modern one.”

“Then who sent the twenty-three-year-old records?”

May you like

His expression changed.

“We still don’t know.”
