Chapter 11 - Thomas’s second son

Samuel’s mother had never told him who his father was.
Only that a “family friend” helped occasionally.
Thomas paid tuition anonymously.
Medical bills.
Once, a down payment on a modest house for Samuel’s mother.
DNA testing later established a strong biological match to Thomas’s preserved samples.
Thomas had two sons.
Julian.
Samuel.
Arthur knew about Samuel.
That was why Thomas’s trust had been structured around future descendants instead of named beneficiaries.
He feared Arthur would target anyone clearly identified.
Samuel had two children.
Which changed everything.
My daughter was not the sole future heir.
Arthur’s legal emergency suddenly made less sense.
Unless he did not know Samuel had children.
He didn’t.
Samuel’s daughters were born under their mother’s surname.
Arthur’s intelligence file on Samuel was outdated.
I almost laughed when Harris explained it.
For all Arthur’s surveillance, wealth, attorneys, and private investigators—
he had missed two little girls living in Baltimore.
His entire succession war had been based on incomplete information.
Then Samuel did something unexpected.
He wanted nothing.
“No shares.”
“No trust.”
“No mansion.”
“My kids don’t need these people.”
Simple.
But inheritance documents did not vanish because beneficiaries disliked them.
Legal resolution would take time.
Arthur, meanwhile, faced increasing scrutiny.
His businesses.
Old shell accounts.
Thomas’s death.
Potential obstruction.
The FBI raid was only the beginning.
Then agents finally decrypted Thomas’s physical data key.
Thousands of files.
Audio.
Contracts.
Photographs.
One folder titled:
If I die.
Inside was a video.
Thomas appeared alone.
Much younger.
Bruised near one eye.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Arthur believes this is about money.”
Pause.
“It isn’t.”
Then:
“The company is being used to move something far worse than money.”
Harris paused the video.
My skin prickled.
“What?”
He continued.
Thomas described Vance Meridian freight routes being used to transport restricted medical equipment and controlled technology through falsified humanitarian shipments.
Some transactions reached sanctioned foreign intermediaries.
That transformed the old fraud into something potentially much more serious.
Then Thomas said:
“If anything happens to me, Beatrice knows where the original manifests are.”
Everyone turned toward Beatrice.
May you like
For days she had presented herself as Arthur’s accomplice, frightened wife, cruel mother-in-law, liar.
Now Thomas was naming her as keeper of the most dangerous evidence.
