Chapter 12 - Beatrice’s private vault

Beatrice initially denied possessing anything.

Then federal agents showed her Thomas’s video.

She cried.

Not elegantly.

Her entire body shook.

“I promised him.”

Arthur stared at her from across the interview room.

“You bitch.”

She looked at him.

Something changed.

For forty years, she had feared Arthur.

I finally saw it.

Cruelty downward often begins with fear upward.

That did not erase what she did to me.

But it explained why she survived by choosing whoever seemed strongest.

Until now.

Beatrice provided the location.

A private storage vault under her maiden name.

Inside were original shipping manifests.

Photographs.

Letters from Thomas.

And something else.

A handwritten confession.

Not murder.

Arthur admitted paying officials, routing illegal shipments, and obstructing investigations.

Why write that?

Because Thomas had blackmailed him into it years earlier.

Insurance.

Arthur later believed he recovered every copy.

He hadn’t.

Then one letter between Thomas and Beatrice revealed their relationship had continued after Julian’s birth.

Not romantic consistently.

Secret alliance.

Thomas begged her to leave Arthur.

She refused.

Fear.

Money.

Children.

Status.

All tangled.

Then Beatrice told investigators what happened the night Thomas died.

She heard Arthur and Thomas fighting.

Brandon was home.

Seventeen.

Julian eleven.

She stayed upstairs.

Cowardice, she called it.

Later she found Thomas unconscious in the study.

Arthur told her Thomas overdosed.

She believed him.

Or chose to.

But Brandon had blood on his cuff.

My stomach tightened.

Brandon.

Not Arthur?

Beatrice insisted she never knew.

Then Thomas’s old diary surfaced from the vault.

Final entry:

B is becoming dangerous. Arthur refuses to see it.

B.

Brandon.

At seventeen.

Had Brandon killed Thomas?

That seemed almost too clean.

Then Harris found a juvenile incident report sealed decades earlier.

Brandon had assaulted a groundskeeper months before Thomas died.

Family settlement.

No prosecution.

Pattern.

Then Brandon disappeared.

He had left federal interview supervision before investigators developed sufficient grounds to hold him.

His phone went dark.

A private jet registered to a family associate departed for Canada.

Arthur raged.

Beatrice went silent.

Julian whispered:

May you like

“He always runs when Dad can’t protect him.”

And I realized the most dangerous Vance might never have been Arthur.
