Chapter 15 - Take it all away

For the first time since the gala, Chloe looked genuinely shocked.
She hadn't known.
Our mother had given her the final inheritance.
Not because Chloe was loved more.
Because Mother assumed the four legitimate Sterling children would never unanimously surrender power.
Our cooperation triggered the impossible condition.
Chloe laughed.
Then stared at me.
“So now what?”
The same question had begun everything.
Take it all away.
But revenge looked different now.
Dominic expected me to destroy him.
My brothers expected Chloe to seize Sterling.
Investigators expected another family war.
I looked at my sister.
“Finish it.”
She could have taken billions.
Instead, Chloe signed the termination.
S7 began dismantling.
Hidden accounts froze pending lawful review.
Coercive files went to independent investigators.
Surveillance archives involving innocent family members were placed under court-supervised destruction protocols.
Dominic resigned from Vanguard and faced civil and potential criminal consequences unrelated to the secret system. Amelia left him.
So did I.
I didn't take Sophia from her father.
But I stopped protecting him from the consequences of being one.
Months later, he began rebuilding separate relationships with both children under boundaries neither mother allowed him to control.
Alexander publicly acknowledged Noah only after Amelia agreed it was right for her son.
No fairy-tale family formed afterward.
There were too many wounds.
Victor stopped solving problems through intimidation.
Nathaniel began dismantling the opaque banking structures Father created.
Alexander's political career survived—but barely.
And Chloe?
She didn't become my best friend.
She became my sister.
Slowly.
Awkwardly.
Honestly.
Six months later, Sophia and I returned to Vanguard Horizon.
Not for Dominic.
The company had survived restructuring.
A children's charity was holding an event downstairs.
Sophia wore another handmade necklace.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Did Uncle Victor really take everything away that night?”
I smiled.
“No.”
“What happened?”
“We found out some things weren't worth keeping.”
She seemed satisfied.
Then someone called my name.
“Vivienne Sterling?”
An elderly man stood near reception.
I didn't recognize him.
He handed me an envelope.
“Your father instructed me to deliver this if S7 was ever destroyed.”
My brothers gathered around.
Inside was one page.
Congratulations, Vivienne.
You finally did the one thing neither your mother nor I believed any Sterling would do.
You chose to lose.
Beneath it:
That means you're ready to learn what the Sterling fortune was actually built to protect.
Victor stopped breathing.
There was a key taped beneath the letter.
Not to a bank.
Not to a vault.
A safety-deposit tag carried coordinates.
Chloe entered them into her phone.
The location appeared.
Northern Virginia.
Alexander stared at it.
“I know that address.”
“What's there?”
He looked at me.
“A federal facility.”
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“Mrs. Sterling, your father's contingency has concluded.”
I looked at Sophia.
“What contingency?”
The answer erased my smile.
“S7 was never the Sterling family's most important secret.”
A pause.
“It was designed to determine which of Charles Sterling's children could be trusted with S8.”
May you like
The call ended.
And somewhere in Virginia, a system carrying my name came online.
