Chapter 14 - What my mother feared

I expected some hidden darkness.
A diagnosis.
A crime.
A secret about my birth.
The truth was stranger.
Mother believed I resembled Charles too closely.
Not physically.
Psychologically.
Under pressure, I could detach emotion from decision.
She had seen it when I was a child.
Alexander sought approval.
Nathaniel negotiated.
Victor attacked threats.
I observed.
Waited.
Then acted once.
Mother feared that if I inherited absolute Sterling control, I'd become more ruthless than Father.
So she designed S7 to exclude me.
Father discovered this after her death.
And disagreed.
He modified the system.
Mother wanted to prevent me from winning.
Father wanted to prove I should.
Two dead parents had turned four children into pieces on a board.
I finally understood what needed to happen.
I wasn't going to win.
I was going to destroy the game.
Victor stared at me when I explained.
“S7 contains billions in control mechanisms.”
“I know.”
“Voting leverage. Trust authority. Political evidence.”
“I know.”
“You destroy it, we lose protection.”
“Good.”
Alexander surprised everyone.
“I agree.”
Nathaniel followed.
Victor resisted longest.
Then Sophia entered carrying her repaired necklace.
“Uncle Victor?”
He looked at her.
“Are you mad at Mommy?”
“No.”
“Good. Because families shouldn't fight over stupid stuff.”
Victor laughed.
Then cried.
I'd never seen my brother cry.
We agreed unanimously.
Terminate S7.
Release criminal evidence through lawful independent channels.
Destroy behavioral surveillance.
Separate family assets from hidden coercive structures.
Then Eleanor interrupted.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“S7 has one final protection.”
If all four recognized Sterling siblings voted to terminate it, ownership of the controlling trust automatically transferred.
“To whom?”
She looked at Chloe.
The excluded child.
May you like
My half-sister.
Chloe suddenly controlled everything.
