Chapter 11 - The experiment

S7 wasn't merely financial surveillance.

It was behavioral.

Decades of emails.

Calls.

Purchases.

Relationships.

Arguments.

Medical events.

Failures.

Loyalties.

Our parents had created a system capable of modeling how each Sterling child responded under pressure.

Father expanded it obsessively.

Why?

Succession.

He didn't trust inheritance.

He wanted to determine which child could protect Sterling after his death.

Alexander represented influence.

Nathaniel money.

Victor force.

I represented something Father couldn't quantify.

I had left.

Refused Sterling power.

Married outside his world.

That made me the uncontrolled variable.

The gala crisis activated the final model.

I felt sick.

“My daughter's pain was a test?”

Chloe shook her head.

“Not Father's test.”

Someone had restarted it.

S7 had been dormant until eighteen months earlier.

Exactly when Dominic discovered suspicious transfers.

Who reactivated it?

Biometric authorization required a Sterling.

Alexander?

Nathaniel?

Victor?

Me?

Then Amelia spoke.

“What about Chloe?”

Half-Sterling through our mother.

Possibly compatible.

Chloe volunteered her DNA.

Not her.

Then we found a fifth authorization profile.

No name.

Genetic relationship to me:

Parent/child.

My father?

Impossible.

The profile was female.

My mother had supposedly died twenty-two years earlier.

Victor whispered:

“Another fake death?”

I almost laughed.

Not again.

But hospital records were clear.

Our mother had died from cancer.

We attended her funeral.

We saw her body.

Unless—

Chloe interrupted.

“She had a twin.”

None of us knew.

Our mother's identical twin had been erased from family history after a vicious dispute.

Name:

Evelyn Vale.

Vale.

The surname struck Victor first.

Margaret Vale.

We investigated.

Margaret wasn't Evelyn.

She was Evelyn's daughter.

Our cousin.

And suddenly decades of hostility acquired a family shape.

Then S7 sent a live location.

Dominic.

A private estate in Connecticut.

Registered owner:

Evelyn Vale.

May you like

My mother's twin was alive.

And someone wanted us to find her.
