Chapter 2 - Audrey had been collecting evidence

At the hospital, Audrey slept for almost fourteen hours.

I didn't.

Julian was arrested initially on charges related to assault, unlawful restraint and threatening conduct. Investigators were still determining exactly what had happened inside the mansion.

Arthur already had attorneys working.

By sunrise, their story was circulating.

Audrey was unstable.

Audrey had attacked Julian.

Audrey's injuries occurred when he “restrained her for her own protection.”

The black ledger changed everything.

When Audrey woke, I placed it beside her.

“What is this?”

She stared at it.

“I've been investigating them.”

“For how long?”

“Eight months.”

My daughter wasn't trapped inside that mansion simply because her marriage had deteriorated.

She had discovered something.

Julian's family owned Thorne Municipal Solutions, a consulting company that won infrastructure contracts across three counties.

Audrey handled charitable accounts for Miriam's foundation.

One afternoon she noticed repeated payments to organizations that barely existed.

Then she followed the money.

Fake charities.

Consulting retainers.

Land purchases.

Payments routed through shell companies.

“Why didn't you call me?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I knew what losing Mom did to you.”

That hurt.

She had been protecting me using silence.

Exactly the mistake I had spent my career watching people make.

Audrey opened the ledger.

Initials.

Dates.

Dollar amounts.

Public officials.

Contract numbers.

My pulse changed.

I recognized three names immediately.

A county commissioner.

A deputy procurement director.

And Judge Nathan Cole.

The judge assigned to Julian's first appearance that afternoon.

I stood.

Audrey grabbed my wrist.

“Dad, there's more.”

She told me Julian hadn't discovered the ledger accidentally.

Someone had warned him.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Then she showed me her phone.

At 7:18 the previous evening, an anonymous message arrived:

Your father knows what you're doing.

My stomach tightened.

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

Another message followed.

Ask Daniel what happened in 2009.

I stared at the date.

Audrey noticed.

“What happened in 2009?”

I didn't answer quickly enough.

Her expression changed.

“Dad?”

Because 2009 was the year my corruption unit investigated Arthur Thorne for the first time.

And I had never told Audrey.

We built a case strong enough to destroy him.

Then every witness recanted within seventy-two hours.

One investigator disappeared.

And the entire file was ordered closed.

By my own supervisor.
