Chapter 11 - The people who came to rescue us

Ortiz's car was found abandoned.
Her phone remained inside.
No blood.
No struggle.
Just one message typed but never sent:
DO NOT TRUST THE FED—
That was enough.
Cross issued warrants claiming I had stolen classified evidence.
Suddenly I became the criminal.
Audrey too.
Arthur surprised me.
He hid us.
Inside his own estate.
The mansion where my daughter had been imprisoned days earlier became our safe house.
Miriam unlocked a concealed basement beneath the wine cellar.
“Julian doesn't know this exists.”
Audrey stared at her.
“You watched him hurt me.”
Miriam looked down.
“Yes.”
No excuse.
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid of my son.”
Audrey laughed bitterly.
“So was I.”
That ended the conversation.
Then Arthur admitted something.
Julian's violence hadn't begun recently.
They had covered previous incidents.
Paid people.
Silenced complaints.
Protected their son.
Not because of the conspiracy.
Because they were cowards.
That distinction mattered.
Not every cruelty was part of the grand plot.
Some people simply made terrible choices.
Audrey didn't forgive them.
Neither did I.
Then someone opened the hidden basement door.
I raised my weapon.
A woman stepped down.
Older.
Thinner.
Silver threaded through brown hair.
Rebecca.
Audrey made a sound I had never heard before.
“Mom?”
Rebecca stopped.
My daughter crossed the room and slapped her.
Hard.
Everyone froze.
Rebecca accepted it.
Then Audrey hit her again.
“You were alive.”
“I know.”
“You watched me marry him.”
“I know.”
“You watched Dad bury someone!”
Rebecca started crying.
“I know.”
Audrey collapsed against her anyway.
Love doesn't always wait for forgiveness.
I stood several feet away.
Rebecca looked at me.
“Daniel.”
I couldn't touch her.
Not yet.
“Tell me why.”
She wiped her tears.
“Because Margaret wasn't running the network.”
“Cross?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Rebecca looked toward Arthur.
He became pale.
She said:
“The network isn't controlled by one person.”
“It's controlled by a vote.”
Forty-three members.
Major decisions required twenty-two.
And someone had recently assembled enough votes to order Audrey eliminated.
“Who?”
Rebecca looked directly at me.
“Your brother.”
May you like
Thomas had not returned to destroy the network.
He had taken control of it.
