Chapter 1 - The storm on Silver Street

“Dad… please help me—”

Then silence.

Twenty-three minutes later, I stood beneath freezing rain outside the Thorne estate, staring at the man who had married my only daughter.

Julian rested a baseball bat across his shoulder.

“Your daughter needed to learn her lesson.”

Behind him, Arthur Thorne sipped bourbon while Miriam watched me as calmly as if we were discussing dinner reservations.

I didn't answer.

Audrey's damaged car sat beside the garage.

Her purse remained inside.

One headlight was shattered.

Then I saw a pale hand press against an upstairs window.

Audrey.

Someone jerked her backward.

I stepped forward.

Julian lowered the bat.

“Another step and you're trespassing.”

I stopped.

Not because I feared him.

Because my phone was recording.

For twelve years after leaving the Army, I'd investigated public corruption for the State Attorney General’s Office.

Julian believed I'd spent my life repairing engines.

He had no idea Audrey's emergency app had already uploaded her interrupted call to a secure evidence server.

Or that before arriving, I'd sent one message to an old colleague:

Possible unlawful confinement. Armed suspect. Stand by.

“Let me see my daughter.”

Julian smiled.

“She’s my wife.”

A scream came from upstairs.

His smile disappeared.

That was enough.

Three police SUVs tore through the gates.

Julian dropped the bat as officers flooded the porch.

I ran upstairs.

Audrey was locked inside a bedroom.

She could barely stand.

When she saw me, she whispered:

“I knew you'd come.”

I carried my daughter outside.

Then an officer emerged behind us holding a sealed evidence bag.

Inside wasn't the baseball bat.

It was a small black ledger discovered beneath Audrey's bed.

Arthur saw it.

His bourbon glass slipped from his fingers.

Miriam went completely white.

Audrey looked at the book too.

Then she whispered something I wasn't expecting.

“Dad…”

May you like

“That isn't theirs.”

“It’s mine.”
