Chapter 2 - Touch me again

Brandon was the first one stupid enough to test me.
He stepped forward and shoved my shoulder.
Not hard.
Hard enough to make a point.
“You military people really think you’re important.”
I barely moved.
Then I looked down at his hand.
Back at him.
“Touch me again.”
His smile disappeared.
Ethan stepped around him.
“This is my wife.”
He pointed at Emily.
“She’s coming home.”
Emily flinched.
I moved between them.
“No.”
Ethan laughed.
“You don’t make decisions in my marriage.”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“Emily does.”
He reached toward her.
I knocked his hand aside.
Not a strike.
Not revenge.
A barrier.
“Do not touch her.”
Hospital security appeared in the doorway.
Margaret immediately changed tone.
“There’s been a misunderstanding.”
Of course.
Cruel people love the word misunderstanding once witnesses arrive.
Emily sat straighter.
Then did something none of them expected.
She reached beneath her hospital gown.
Around her neck was a thin silver chain.
At first, it looked ordinary.
Then she opened the pendant.
A tiny recorder.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Margaret’s head snapped toward him.
Brandon whispered:
“What the hell is that?”
Emily’s fingers shook.
“Mom… I recorded everything.”
For the first time since entering the room, I felt hope.
Not relief.
Hope.
Evidence matters.
Memory can be attacked.
Bruises can be explained away.
Fear can be called instability.
But recordings force liars to work harder.
Margaret lunged toward the necklace.
“Give me that.”
I stepped in front of her.
She stopped.
Emily pressed play.
Static.
Footsteps.
Then Ethan’s voice.
Clear.
“Lock the door.”
Emily covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“If she tries to leave again, make sure she remembers what happens.”
Brandon backed toward the wall.
Ethan shouted:
“Turn that off!”
Security grabbed his arms when he rushed forward.
Then a new voice entered from the hallway.
“Colonel Hart.”
I knew it immediately.
Federal Agent Daniel Reed stood at the far end of the corridor carrying a thick sealed evidence envelope.
Margaret saw the seal.
Her face collapsed.
Reed said:
“We found the Prescott file.”
Margaret whispered:
“No.”
Then:
May you like
“That was buried twenty years ago.”
And that was when I realized Emily’s abuse was connected to something much older than her marriage.
