Chapter 1 - The call before sunset

“Mom… please come get me.”

Emily’s voice was so faint I almost didn’t recognize it.

I was standing inside my office at Fort Liberty when the call came, still wearing my Army dress uniform after a command ceremony.

“Emily?”

A breath.

Then:

“They hurt me.”

Everything inside me went still.

“Where are you?”

“Mercy General.”

“Are you safe right now?”

“I think so.”

Think.

Not yes.

That word was enough.

I left within minutes.

By the time I reached Charlotte, the last sunlight had disappeared behind the buildings.

I entered the emergency department in full uniform, medals still pinned across my jacket.

A nurse stepped in front of me.

“Ma’am, visitors aren’t—”

“My daughter. Emily Hart.”

She looked at my face.

Then stepped aside.

Room 317.

I found Emily beneath a hospital blanket.

Her white dress was torn.

One side of her face was swollen.

Her lower lip had split.

Dark bruises wrapped around both arms.

For one terrible second, she wasn’t twenty-seven.

She was six years old again, waiting at the window for me to return from deployment.

“Mom.”

I crossed the room and held her.

Her entire body shook.

Then she whispered:

“They took my phone.”

“Who?”

Before she answered, a man’s voice came from the doorway.

“She’s always had a talent for drama.”

Ethan Prescott.

My son-in-law.

Navy suit.

Perfect hair.

No shame.

Behind him stood his mother, Margaret, in an immaculate white pantsuit, and his older brother Brandon.

Margaret smiled at me.

“Colonel Hart. Emily became emotional and had an accident.”

Emily grabbed my sleeve.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“They locked me in the guest house.”

Ethan sighed.

“Here we go.”

“They said they’d ruin me if I tried to leave.”

Brandon laughed.

“Not everyone is built for a family like ours.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“Your military title does not intimidate us, Colonel.”

I looked at all three of them.

One by one.

They mistook my silence for fear.

May you like

They had no idea I had already made three phone calls before entering that hospital.

And one of those calls had reached a man who had spent twenty years waiting for the Prescott name to reappear.
