Chapter 12 - William Prescott comes back

William had entered Fort Liberty under federal escort that morning.

Not as a criminal.

As a cooperating witness.

He had contacted military investigators months earlier.

That explained why Reed had known where to look when Emily called.

My phone calls accelerated something already moving.

William Prescott walked into the secure interview room looking nothing like the powerful businessman from old photographs.

Seventy.

Thin.

Cane.

Scarred jaw.

But his eyes were sharp.

Margaret stared at him through the glass.

Then sat down.

No tears.

Maybe too much had happened for tears.

I entered first.

William looked at my uniform.

“Colonel Hart.”

“You know who I am.”

“I’ve known for twenty years.”

“You let my family live under your secrets.”

He accepted that.

“Yes.”

“Did your company have anything to do with Michael’s death?”

His face changed.

“No.”

“Did Crescent pay the maintenance contractor?”

“Yes.”

My hands tightened.

“Then explain.”

The contractor was receiving bribes for unrelated equipment diversion.

Michael’s helicopter happened to be maintained by the same company.

After the crash, William feared the payment trail would make it look connected.

He buried it.

Cowardly.

Potentially criminal.

But according to the reopened technical evidence, Michael’s accident resulted from a manufacturing defect, not sabotage.

For the first time in days, I could breathe.

Not because William was good.

Because not every tragedy had been engineered.

Then I asked:

“Why Emily?”

He looked down.

“Because you lost your husband while I was hiding crimes that should have been exposed.”

He created the trust as restitution.

Not enough.

Never enough.

But something.

Then:

“Why not tell me?”

“Because Leonard Graves warned me that if the old case reopened, people would die.”

“Who?”

William looked through the glass at Brandon.

“My son.”

I followed his gaze.

“Which son?”

His expression turned cold.

“The one I should have stopped years ago.”

Then he handed Reed a drive.

It contained twenty years of records.

And one video.

Recorded inside the Prescott estate three months earlier.

Brandon.

Leonard.

Ethan.

May you like

And Margaret.

Emily wasn’t the only person secretly recording that family.
