Chapter 14 - The Prescott empire cracks

The Prescott family did not lose everything overnight.
That kind of ending belongs to fantasy.
Real collapses happen through paperwork.
Subpoenas.
Audits.
Suspensions.
Board votes.
Search warrants.
Frozen transactions.
Witness interviews.
The recording from Emily’s necklace became part of the domestic violence investigation.
Her injuries were documented.
The guest house was examined.
Messages were preserved.
Her phone was recovered from a locked office drawer.
Ethan faced charges and protective restrictions based on evidence investigators believed supported them.
Brandon’s problems were larger.
Old Crescent accounts.
Modern fraud.
Threats.
Forgery.
Trust manipulation.
Leonard Graves faced scrutiny over both the historical investigation and current conduct.
William’s archive gave prosecutors pathways, not automatic convictions.
Margaret cooperated selectively through counsel.
Her own role remained under review.
Emily filed for divorce.
That part mattered most to me.
Not because I wanted the Prescotts punished.
Because Emily chose herself.
She moved temporarily into my home near Fort Liberty.
The first week, she apologized for everything.
Taking too long in the shower.
Leaving a cup on the counter.
Waking from nightmares.
I finally told her:
“You never have to apologize for existing in my house.”
She cried for twenty minutes.
Baby steps.
Therapy.
Medical care.
Legal support.
Sleep.
Then one afternoon, she asked:
“Do you hate Ethan?”
I thought.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“I hate what he did.”
“That’s different?”
“Yes.”
Because hate can become another chain.
Emily looked toward the window.
“I think I still love him.”
“That doesn’t mean you go back.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
That was growth.
Then Reed called.
William had given investigators everything.
Or claimed he had.
But one part of the old Prescott file was still missing.
A list.
Names of officials, contractors, and intermediaries who helped bury the original case.
William said Leonard kept it.
Leonard denied it.
Then a search of Brandon’s private office uncovered a safe.
Inside was no list.
Just one photograph.
Me.
Taken two months earlier.
Outside Fort Liberty.
Someone had been watching me before Emily’s hospital call.

On the back:
Hart is still the problem.
