Chapter 7 - The Woman in the Hallway
David ran upstairs.
The hallway was empty.
The hidden service door stood open.
Inside, police found wet fabric fibers and a flashlight.
No woman.
No box.
But this time she left something deliberately.
A cassette recorder.
Laura’s voice emerged through static.
“If you're hearing this, Charles has probably told David I betrayed him.”
David stopped breathing.
Laura continued.
“I didn't.”
The recording was made two days after her crash.
Laura was alive.
She said she staged nothing.
She lost control during storm, survived the ravine and was pulled from car by a passing motorist.
Instead of hospital, she called Charles.
Why not David?
Because hours before accident she discovered someone had used David’s electronic authorization on a Meridian transfer.
She believed David might be involved.
David whispered:
“I wasn't.”
Laura eventually learned that.
But not immediately.
Charles convinced her to stay hidden for forty-eight hours while they identified who accessed David’s credentials.
Then Charles discovered something that frightened both of them.
The transfer was not moving Meridian money out.
It was moving $900,000 into the reserve.
From an account Laura did not recognize.
Sender:
Aster Foundation.
Who controlled Aster?
Sealed.
Laura suspected someone was quietly repaying Meridian.
Why would repayment be dangerous?
Because it implied someone knew money had been wrongly diverted before anyone publicly admitted it.
Laura ended recording:
“I have the original Harper agreement. Margaret gave it to me. If I come home before we identify Aster, whoever has been paying this debt will know we found them.”
Then:
“David, if you hear this someday, I'm sorry I didn't trust you first.”
Tape ended.
David sat motionless.
Laura survived at least two days.
Charles helped her hide.
Maya knew none of it.
Then Emma asked the question David feared.
“Did Mommy leave because of you?”
“No.”
He hesitated.
“She left because she didn't know who to trust.”
That included him.
Then forensic accountants traced Aster Foundation.
It had contributed exactly $900,000 to Meridian six years ago.
Then another $900,000 five years ago.
Then annually.
Total:
$5.4 million.
Someone had been repaying an obligation quietly after Laura disappeared.
Aster’s registered director was a lawyer.
Underlying donor confidential.
But the payment memo carried initials:
L.B.
Laura Bennett?
Could Laura herself be paying?
Impossible to assume.
David was wealthy; Laura had not possessed millions independently.
Then Michael Grant called.
His voice shook.
“I know what Aster is.”
“What?”
“Your father didn't create it.”
“Who did?”
“Your wife.”
David stared.
Michael added:
“But Laura didn't put the money in.”
“Then who did?”
