Chapter 13 - The Voice Without a Face
Anna surrendered voluntarily.
She had nothing to hide about entering house.
Her instructions came from an account she genuinely believed belonged to Laura.
Forensics confirmed sender possessed Laura’s old recovery codes.
Who had them?
Laura.
Anna.
And Charles.
Charles dead.
Anna denied sending to herself.
So perhaps Laura was lying in letter.
Or someone inherited Charles’s archive.
Then Box 417 provided clue.
A sealed inventory sheet listed one item removed three months earlier:
LAURA BENNETT — AUDIO JOURNALS / 2018–2020.
Authorized withdrawal:
C. Bennett Estate Executor.
Who was executor?
Maya.
David looked at her.
Maya went pale.
“I never withdrew them.”
Signature appeared hers.
Authentication came from her estate token.
Token had gone missing two months after Charles died.
She never reported it because she feared admitting negligence.

Diane.
David.
House manager Rachel Sloan.
And Charles’s longtime security consultant, Victor Hale.
Victor had quietly retired after Charles’s death.
David barely remembered him.
Maya did.

Including service corridor sensors.
Suddenly architecture made sense.
Police located Victor.
His house was empty.
Bank records showed no flight.
Phone off.

NOW ASK WHY LAURA NEEDED SIX YEARS.
Was Victor mastermind?

David refused chase blindly.
Independent investigators reconstructed Victor’s role.
Charles hired him after Laura’s crash to secure evidence and prevent unauthorized access.
Victor knew about Laura’s survival for eleven days.
He helped hide her at cottage.
He also copied audio journals as security backup.
After Laura disappeared again, Victor believed Charles had arranged it.
Charles denied.
Their relationship collapsed.
Victor began keeping records.
Why manipulate current night?

He sent Anna false instructions.
He triggered confrontation.
He was the architect of tonight.
Not of six-year disappearance.

But of storm-night trap.
David was furious.
Victor had intentionally placed Emma in foreseeable danger.
Victor claimed by message he expected Maya to question her, not restrain her.

Then Victor sent location.
North Hollow? Let's choose old Bennett model home.
David went with police.
Victor surrendered.
No dramatic violence.
He handed over audio drives.
“I needed Maya to show what she would do.”
“You used my daughter.”
“I didn't expect—”
“Stop.”
David had heard enough adults explain.
Victor admitted sending photos? Wait Anna sent them, under Victor's forged Laura instructions. He accessed camera remotely and could send second? Anna took. Fine.
Then David asked one question.
“Where is Laura?”
Victor looked genuinely confused.
“I thought you knew.”
“Why would I know?”
“Because three months ago someone used your private account to send her $40,000.”
David stared.
He had not.
Again his identity.
But this transaction did not use DB-LEGACY.
It came from David’s actual personal checking account.
Authenticated by his own phone.
At 2:13 a.m.
