Chapter 14 - The Person Who Used David’s Phone
Only three people knew David’s phone passcode.
David.
Maya.
Emma.
Emma was seven.
Maya denied.
Security backup finally resolved it.
The transfer occurred on a night Maya stayed at house after helping David organize Charles’s estate.
At 2:07 a.m., kitchen camera showed Maya enter office.
At 2:16 she left.
David stared at footage.
Maya stopped denying.
“I sent it.”
“To Laura?”
“I didn't know it was Laura.”
“Who did you think?”
“A woman calling herself L.B.”
Laura Bennett.
“You never considered that?”
“I thought it meant Legacy Beneficiary.”
Why send $40,000?
The woman offered Charles’s missing estate records.
Maya believed purchasing documents would protect estate from litigation.
She used David’s account because payment request specified it had to come from Bennett family principal.
Unauthorized.
Another serious betrayal.
Where sent?
A legal-services escrow in Maine.
Recipient identity sealed.
Subpoena revealed:
Laura Bennett.
Alive.
Verified by in-person identification three months ago.
No more uncertainty.
David sat alone after learning.
His wife was alive.
She had accepted money from his account.
Why?
Escrow description:
REIMBURSEMENT — DOCUMENT PRESERVATION / SIX YEARS.
Not payoff.
Laura had spent money preserving records, travel and storage.
Still, why contact Maya instead of David?
Because she believed Maya needed to expose herself as willing to misuse David’s authority.
Another test.
David almost laughed from exhaustion.
Everyone tested everyone.
No one simply spoke.
Then Laura’s Box 417 letter had more pages.
She explained she deliberately contacted Maya under initials L.B.
She wanted proof Maya still acted secretly.
Maya failed.
Laura then planned to contact David directly.
But before she could, someone stole her audio journals and accessed contingency email.
Victor.
She withdrew again.
Fear returned.
Then David reached paragraph about storm night.
If Victor is using my voice, he will try to make Maya reveal where I hid the agreement. He believes she knows. She doesn't.
So Laura anticipated possibility but did not orchestrate it.
Then:
The agreement is not the thing I was protecting most.
David looked at black metal box.
Beneath Meridian documents was false bottom.
Inside:
A small brass key.
A photograph.
And a sealed card.
The photograph showed Laura with Charles six years earlier.
No mystery there.
But behind them stood Victor.
And another woman.
David recognized her.
Diane Holloway.
Maya’s mother.
Card:
DIANE KNOWS WHY I STAYED GONE AFTER MERIDIAN WAS SOLVED.
Maya stared at her mother’s face.
“What does she know?”
They called Diane.
She agreed to come.
She admitted Meridian accounting was effectively reconstructed four years ago.
Enough evidence existed then.
Laura could have returned.
“Why didn't she?”
Diane began crying.
“Because Meridian stopped being the problem.”
“What became the problem?”
Diane looked at David.
“Your father found something in Laura’s records.”
“What?”
“A payment.”
“To whom?”
Diane shook her head.
“From whom.”
Then she said the sentence that changed direction entirely:
“The money came from Emma’s trust.”
David stood.
“Emma didn't have a trust six years ago.”
